Hydrodynamic chromatography using a capillary column (C-HDC) was experimentally examined in order to apply it to size determination of fine particles.
Because of a rather simple apparatus and operations, results could be obtained in a short analysis time, and the particle diameter was easily determined by recorded chromatograms. Particle diameters of Al
2O
3 and CaCO
3 samples were measured by this method. The obtained results were reproducible and showed good agreement with the results measured by other methods.
The effects of operation conditions on the separation efficiency for different sized particles were discussed. It was shown that the C-HDC method could be applied to ultrafine particles by using improved capillary columns such as a double-tube column, which is now under testing.
