    The surface properties of iron carbide, dispersive properties in water or an aqueous acetone solution were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermoanalysis of iron carbide treated with cetanol, octadecyltriethoxysilane, isopropyltristearoyltitanate and aminoisopropyltriethoxysilane.
    The followings were observed: (1) The surface zones oxidised by oxygen in an atmosphere were composed of iron oxides, and surface functional groups from carbon and were covered by the surface hydroxyl group. (2)The hydroxyl groups were confirmed by an analysis of pyrolysed products of surface-treated iron carbide to be displaced by the respective functional group of reagents. (3) The displacement of surface hydroxyl groups by the functional groups of the respective reagents was confirmed by an analysis of the pyrolyzed products of surface-treated iron carbide.

    Micro feeding of a fine powder was experimentally investigated by use of a capillary tube (≤1.6mm in diameter) as an exhaust pipe which was vibrated under the conditions of less than 760Hz and 30μm in amplitude.
    It was found that only the particles near the inside wall vibrated at random, and almost all inner particles were transported as a lump of powder. Particles of 10μm in diameter could be discharged continuously at a rate of 0.2mg·s-1. It was also found that the critical frequency for discharging was nearly inversely proportional to the square root of the vibration amplitude. The powder flow rate could be increased with increasing frequency. However, there was a maximum flow rate which depended on the capillary size d and the kinds of powder. The maximum flow rate was found to be proportional to dn where n=2-2.5.

    The size segregation of polydispersed particles stored in a container was studied experimentally by tapping varying the number of taps and the falling height of the container. Tested particles ranged from 150-600μm in size.
    It was found that the smaller particles were concentrated at the vicinity of the container bottom, while larger particles were concentrated at the upper-side. The mass median diameter (MMD) of the particles concentrated along the container bottom became smaller as the number of tapping increased and converged to a certain value. The deviation of this value from the MMD of the feed-particles was almost proportional to the square root of the falling height. This fact showed that the deviation in MMD was related to the impact force of particles which was induced by the tapping.
    Visualization of particle movement was also carried out by the use of colored particles. It was found that the particle recirculation was induced in the container by the tapping; i. e. at the center of the container, particles were rising from the bottom to the surface of the particle-layer, while particles were dropping in the vicinity of the periphery where smaller particles moved down faster than larger particles. On the other hand, larger particles moved faster than smaller particles from the periphery to the center. Thus, it was confirmed that such differences in the movement between larger and smaller particles caused the vertical size segregation of the particles in the container.
