    Coarse particle behavior in a laterally vibrated vessel under microgravity was experimentally studied. The vibration was under the conditions of a frequency of 75-150Hz and a displacement amplitude of 86-310μm. The 2-dimensional displacement distribution of particles which moves 3-dimensionally was measured by particle image sampling within the depth of field. It was found that the distribution was of a saddle shape in which concentration was high at the center of the lateral direction and the ends of the longitudinal direction. The tendency became distinct with increasing total particle concentration. The round-shape corners of the vessel homogenized the distribution due to enhanced circulation. It was also found that particle concentration increased with the velocity amplitude.

    The effect of particle properties on the morphological change of particles induced by impaction against a solid surface has been investigated using tristearin powders mixed with large and hard particles. It is found that the change in the bulk density of the heap formed on the solid surface can be successfully evaluated based on the effective impaction load introduced in our previous paper.
    At low impaction load, the heap consisting of tristearin powder having a larger Young's modulus shows a smaller bulk density. On the other hand, the bulk density of the heap at high impaction load is independent of the Young's modulus of tristearin powders. Furthermore, the degree of α type crystal structure in the heap increases with increasing bulk density.
    Theses results suggest that high impaction load causes melting as well as deformation or crushing of tristearin particles.

    SiC whiskers were coated with alumina hydrate using a newly developed precipitant precursor injection method. This method has the following merits compared with the most popular aqueous coating, homogeous precipitation method using urea; (1) it is possible to coat at room temperature, and (2) only a stoichiometric amount of precipitant is required for coating. In the present method, the precursor of the precipitant was injected into the aqueous solution which inclued raw material for the coating layers in which core particles were dispersed. When ammonium hydrogen-carbonate solution was used as precipitant, alumina hydrate could be coated on SiC whiskers, whereas the coating layer on SiC whisker was not obtained with the injection of NH4OH solution. The difference in the morphology of the above coating layers is considered to be caused by the relatively low hydrolysis rate of hydrogen-carbonate ion. A more homogeneous coating layers was obtained with a higher stirring rate, and a low concentration of precipitant was also effective in obtaining more homogeneous coating layers. Furthermore, when formic acid which has pKa around the precipitation pH was added to the reaction solition, the smooth coating layers which have comparable surface morphology to the coated particle prepared by homogeneous precipitation method was obtained.
