    The characteristics of the horizontal conveyance of dense phase flow of powder was experimentally investigated by using a progressive cavity pump. The results show that the pressure drop depends on the dynamic friction coefficient of powder, that is dynamic wall friction coefficient or dynamic internal friction coefficient. At the same time, the friction factor also depends on the dynamic friction coefficient.
    Next, the correlation between the friction factor and the dynamic friction coefficient of powder was discussed. The pressure drop and the friction factor were affected by a flow pattern of the powder. These should be estimated by the dynamic internal friction coefficient for plug flow, but in the other cases, these are estimated by the dynamic wall friction coefficient.

    In order to improve the performance of the pneumatic conveying system, an injection port is mounted on the particle suction nozzle unit to fluidize the particle bed before the particles are fed into the conveying pipe. Experiments were carried out on the suction nozzle mounted at the injection port the inner diameter ratios of the injection pipe to the suction mouth of which are 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. For the diameter ratio of 0.2, the effects of the injection flow are discussed compared with when there is no injection flow. As a result, the loading ratio increases by means of the injection port mounted on the suction nozzle. It was clarified by the experiments that the nozzle efficiency shows its maximum value when the inner diameter ratio is 0.2. When the inner diameter ratio is smaller than 0.2, the nozzle efficiency shows a smaller value because of higher pressure loss. On the other hand, when the diameter ratio is larger than 0.2, the efficiency also decreases because of the reduction in the effective area of suction flow.

    Critical plug length at the stage of natural plug formation have been experimentally and theoretically obtained by measuring the length and establishing a deformation model of plug flow. As a result, the measured plug length has been in reasonable agreement with the plug length calculated from the model. The plug length were measured on condition that pipeline was 38mm in diameter and 25m long, particles were 1.5mm diameter polythyelene pellets, and the supply particle flow rate was 0.21kg/s. The aim of this study is to obtain the critical plug length by means of an accurate deformation model when a plug generated and transported in a pipeline. The previous studies have mainly focused on pressure loss calculated from a simple plug model that neglects the plug deformation and consists of only one main body. The deformation model considers the generation and development of a plug. Next it considers an accurate plug shape with three parts: front, main body and rear. The generated plug with three parts develops until the critical length by the balance between kniematic energy and energy losses of the particles. The energy losses result from momentum loss caused by accelerating the stationary layer to the plug flow velocity in the front part, and friction drags acting on inter-particles and pipeline inner wall in the main body.

    The apparent contact potential difference (CPD) of powders in an alcohol vapor atmosphere was measured and compared with that obtained in a normal atmosphere. The powders used are the ferrite carrier particles coated with resin; fluorine-contained acrylic silicone, silicone, or alkylmelamine. Silicone resin particles with different degree of curing were prepared by changing the curing temperature.
    The apparent CPD in an alcohol vapor atmosphere reached steady state value faster than in a normal atmosphere. This fact suggests that the electric charge of a powder-layer discharges during exposure to alcohol vapor. The CPD in a normal atmosphere after exposing it to ethanol vapor for the necessary time gives the same value as that obtained in a normal atmosphere, and the measuring time of the CPD was reduced. It was found that the time constant of charge relaxation in an alcohol vapor atmosphere decreased as the vapor pressure of alcohol increased. There was good correlation between the degree of curing of silicone resin and the time constant of charge relaxation in an alcohol vapor atmosphere.

    The dispersion behavior of aqueous silicon nitride suspensions in the presence of polyacrylic ammonium as a dispersant was characterized using a method, which is based on the measurement of the aggregation rate. The stability factor which indicates the resistance of suspension to aggregate increased with increase in the amount of added dispersant, but it reached a limiting value in the high concentration range of the dispersant. The minimum amount of added dispersant to achieve sufficient stability was about 1mg/g-solid at pH 8-9 of a highly concentrated slurry. Both the minimum amounts obtained by the measurement of the volume of sedimentation and the apparent viscosity of a slurry agreed well. This confirmed the feasibility of using the aggregation rate method.

    Grinding was carried out with a disk mill in order to obtain particles of arbitrary shapes and different sizes. Oribin sand was used as the particle sample. A mass of the sample was charged into the mill, and the grinding time was adjusted to prepare particles with a variety of shapes. The particles obtained were separated into each size by sieving for 1 hour. Particle shape was expressed by expanding particle outline coordinates into Fourier series. The shape index was defined as the ratio of short to long axis of the approximated ellipse. It was found that the shape index strongly depends on the charged mass and grinding time, and that particles of various shapes could be obtained in the specified particle size.

    Fine sphere ammonium perchlorate (AP) is necessary in order to manufacture a propellant with a higher burning rate. In order to prepare smaller droplets by splitting a sprayed droplet vigorously in the drying process of the spray-drying method, a high vapor pressure organic solvent saturated with AP was dissolved in the AP solution, and the solution was spray-dried. Acetone, methanol and ethanol were used in this work. Fine sphere AP is prepared when the range of methanol concentration is 70-100vol% and the range of ethanol concentration is 15-85vol%. However when acetone is used, fine sphere AP is not prepared. The mean diameter of fine sphere AP decreases with increase in the concentration of organic solvent and the inlet temperature of drying air, but the mean diameter converges in the range of 1.3-2.2×10-6m. When methanol concentration is 100vol% and the inlet temperature is above 313K, the finest sphere AP is prepared in this work.
