    Lactobacilli (streptococcus faecalis WB2000) are effective in controlling plaque, in preventing dental caries and periodontal disease and in preventing halitosis.
    In this study, pharmaceutical thin films, with live lactobacilli, were developed and examined as a dosage form that disintegrates rapidly and stays in the oral cavity. Four dosage forms were designed. Films were formed in a single layer, (A) and (B), and in two layers, (C) and (D). All films showed rapid disintegration and satisfactory mechanical strength. Dosage form (D) which consists of an active ingredient layer and a base layer without a plasticizer of glycerin gave the most excellent stability in preservation among the four. Lactobacilli formulated in (D) showed the same growth tendency as the powder lactobacilli. Pharmaceutical solid dosage film (D) as a new Lactic acid bacteria preparation could be designed.

    Direct tableting is the easiest method of pharmaceutical compacting processes. The standard formulation, defined in the lactose/corn starch in a 7/3 mixture with 20% binder, was adopted in this process. Four direct compression lactose powders, DCL11, DCL14, Lactopress Spray-dried, Dilactose S, were examined as a lactose in this formulation. Acetaminophen (drug content 1%) was used as a model drug.
    The bulk density of lactose powders were higher than that of mixtures with other excipients. On the other hand, the tap density of mixtures was much higher than that of lactose. The four lactose mixtures showed the same level of flowability in spite of the differences in flowability of the bulk lactose powders. The shearing property of these powders was also measured in order to evaluate the flowability. The tablets from these mixtures had a low friability (<0.5%), a high hardness (>90N) and a short disintegration time (<220s).

    The objective of this study is to search for the possibility to transport or deliver small solid particles by a vortex ring. The numerical simulation for the motion of a vortex ring and glass particles is performed. At the launch of a vortex ring into quiescent air, spherical glass particles are arranged on the cross-section of the vortex ring. The cases of the Stokes number St of 0.01 and 1 are simulated by the vortex method. The simulation for St=0.01 highlights that the vortex ring involves the particles at the launch and that it can transport the particles at a distance of 5.5 times longer than the initial diameter of the vortex ring. The simulation also clarifies the effect of St on the behavior of the vortex ring and the particle motion.

    Techniques for evaluation of particles dispersion state in a suspension are reviewed. An especially novel evaluation technique, “hydrostatic pressure measurement” is explicated. This method can evaluate particles dispersion state precisely and quickly compared to the conventional methods such as apparent viscosity measurement and gravitational sedimentation test. In addition we developed a new filtration system based on the interesting results obtained by using this method. With our developed filtration system we can obtain highly concentrated matterials without a scraping device because they possess a fairly high fluidity due to the addition of dispersants instead of flocculants.

    In this study, the spouting phenomenon of fluidized cohesive powder bed of soft wheat flour of 46μm is experimentally examined. Three ways of air supply: (1) only at the top, (2) only at the bottom and (3) at the top and bottom of the bed are tested. From the results, it is found that the smooth discharge of fine powder from an orifice and the steady flow are attained when the same flow rate of air is simulta-neously introduced at the top and bottom of the bed. Also, it is indicated that the smooth discharge of powder depends on the flow pattern, the void fraction and the interstitial air pressure in the vessel.
