    Flexible printed circuits (FPC) are generally used to assemble electronics units of mobile phones and the other electronics devices. On the recycling of the waste FPC, separation of the layered components in metal substrates, mounted parts and resin films covering printed wire is important for the effective recovery of precious metals and the other elements. However, there are difficulties on their recycle due to their flexible features that prevent to break down themselves against the impaction force of conventional breaking methods. In this study, frequent shearing forces were applied for the waste FPC chips by making use of attrition type milling. The FPC chips were ground and separated into flakes and powders. As results, some elements were selectively separated. 90mass% of Cu was recovered in the flakes on 1mm sieve. On the contrary, almost of Pd was collected in the powder under 1mm sieve.

    Fumed silica has been widely used as various applications to improve functionalities. In order to achieve the desired effect of fumed silica, it is important to control fumed silica dispersion and aggregation behaviors. Although silanol groups on fumed silica surface are water attractive and that strongly affects dispersibility especially in different humid atmosphere, there have been few reports to investigate the relationship between adsorbed water of fumed silica surface and dispersibility. In this experiment, we studied dispersibility of fumed silica, whose surface was controlled of water adsorption, in the mixture of hexane and ethanol with different polarities. In relative permittivity of 15.48, there is a different tendencies between relative humidity of 50.8% and 56.8%. It seems that dispersion and aggregation behaviors are associated with amount of the adsorbed water and polarity in the systems. A small amount of adsorbed water could improve dispersibility in certain polarity.

    The particle assembling state in slurries for cathode of Li-ion battery, which consists of LiCoO2 with particle size of about 10μm and acetylene black powder (AcB) with particle size of about 50 nm, was evaluated through settling test, hydrostatic pressure measurement and flow curve measurement. Several kinds of polymer were used to control the slurry properties. It is found that the slurry consisting of coarse and very fine particles behaved such as a high viscosity liquid when the coarse particles dispersed in the fine particles' gel with a proper strength. It is also shown that the acetylene black can dominate the slurry property while its mass content is quite smaller than that of LiCoO2. We can conclude that the particle assembling state of multi-component slurries such as the LiCoO2 / AcB slurry can be well evaluated by the combination of settling curve, hydrostatic pressure curve and flow curve.

    Experimental studies have been carried out about improvement of hydro-cyclone and water sieve. The separation performance of hydro-cyclone by use of local electrostatic field and fluid flow control method in the upper plate was experimentally investigated. By use of the local electrostatic field applied in the under-flow section, with the center lod as a negative electrode and the outer wall as a positive electrode, the particle separation performance was improved.
    By use of pre-treatment of feed slurry mixing in potential field, particle separation performance increased with the increase of absolute value of negative zeta potential. The partial separation efficiency increased in case of the special ring attached on the upper plate in order to improve particle separation performance. The optimum angle of the special ring was found from the experimental data.
    The separation performance of horizontal type water elutriator with electrical potential was newly examined. It is shown that the 50% cut size about 1μm was realized for relatively short time. The proposed new methods may be effective in practical wet separation process.

    Generally speaking, it is difficult to use a low rank coal due to its lower heat value. However, the low rank coal can turn into a useful fuel, if it is economically dewatered and upgraded to have a higher calorific value. Besides, some of the low rank coals have characteristics of a low sulfur content and a low ash content, which are favorable for a fuel. After operations of a pilot plant (capacity of 3 t/h) as well as a demonstration plant (capacity of 600 t/h) in Indonesia, Kobe Steel has successfully developed the UBC® (Upgraded Brown Coal) process under a support of the Japanese government, which can efficiently upgrade some low rank coals. Based on data that were collected during the operations, Kobe Steel began a feasibility study of a future commercial plant.
