In order to classify fine particles in slurry flow, vertical type water sieve with electro-potential applied to flow is newly developed. The 50% cut size decreases with the increase of under-flow rate of coarse side. The maximum particle size in the over-flow side decreases as the over-flow rate decreases.
By use of the electro potential applied to the upper and lower plates, the 50% cut size decreases with the increase of applied potential. The minimum cut size of about 0.62μm was obtained from the experimental data. The accuracy of classification also increases with the increase of applied potential. The experimental data of cut size agreed with the calculation results based on gravity and electro migration effect in particle sedimentation velocity.

Direct tableting is the most useful method of pharmaceutical compaction processes. In this process, the formulated mixtures need to have the suitable flowability in order to keep the uniformities of tablet quality and drug content. The standard formulation, defined in the excipient/corn starch in a 7/3 mixture with 20% low-substituted hydroxypropylcellulose as a binder and 0.5% magnesium stearate as a lubricant, was adapted for this process. Acetaminophen (drug content 1%) was used as a model drug. Anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, dibasic calcium phosphate hydrate, granulated lactose were examined for excipient.
Flow properties and shearing properties of excipient powders and formulated mixture powders were determined. These characteristics of formulated mixture powders would be related the deviation of tablet mass and the uniformity of drug content.

Many of AMD (acid mine drainage) treatment of abandoned mines in Japan are being conducted under governmental support as non-profit enterprises. Because the conventional system which uses alkaline chemicals, produces a large amount of precipitation to be treated as waste, more economical processes are strongly desired. We have proposed "the bacterial oxidation and two step neutralization processes" for the low pH and high Fe content AMD, and conducted the operation tests using a 1/100 scale plant. As a result, it was shown clearly that the amount of the neutralizer used can be reduced by 20% and that the amount of neutralized sediment can be lowered by 37% compared with the conventional system. Furthermore, we tried to reuse this neutralized sediment as interior tile. While the tiles produced have sufficient performance to be used, the cost of production should be improved.
