    The texture of powder cosmetics, such as "smoothness" and "moist feeling", is one of the most important properties for the usability assessment. In general, we rely upon the sensory evaluation for cosmetics. However, such subjective evaluation tends to be vague because of not only the lack of evaluators' skill but also the reproducibility error on environmental factors. Therefore, a highly-reliable evaluation method by using physical properties, such as particulate mechanical characteristics, is desired.
    In this study, we investigated the correlation between the sense of use and physical properties by the direct shear testing of the powder bed for five kinds of cosmetic powder. As a result, we found that internal friction coefficient μi was correlated with the "smoothness". Furthermore, the shearing cohesion τc and the degree of PYL (Powder Yield Locus) curve were related to "moist feeling", respectively.

    Experiments of flue gas desulfurization were carried out using electrostatic spray. The organic acid solutions dissolving CaCO3 were used to prepare the highly reactive absorbent for desulfurization. The micro-properties of dried spent absorbents were characterized using a Raman microscope. Phosphoric acid, malonic acid, citric acid, formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid having the different acidity degrees were selected. The phosphoric acid was easily combined with the calcium in solution and produced the insolvable solids. The solution containing Ca of malonic and citric acids considerably enhanced the SO2 absorption efficiencies because of the effect of buffered solution which consists of a mixture of a weak acid and its calcium compounds. The dissolved Ca in solution of acetic, formic and propionic acids reacted with SO2 to form CaSO4・2H2O as desulfurization product. Effects of organic acids on the desulfurization mechanism were strongly dependent on the acidities degrees of organic acids

    In the present study, we synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) particles, which is a family of porous coordination polymers (PCPs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), by mixing a zinc nitrate solution with a 2-methylimidazole solution in a microreactor, and investigated the effect of the ratio of the concentration of 2-methylimidazole to that of zinc nitrate on the particle size. Our experiments demonstrated that the increase in the ratio decreases the ZIF-8 particle size, and the minimum particle size is 50 nm at the ratio of 200, which is accomplished by unequal flow rates of zinc nitrate and 2-methlimidazole. Further decrease in the particle size to 20 nm was achieved by the addition of n-butylamine molecules. We measured adsorption isotherms of N2 in ZIF-8 particles and found that smaller ZIF-8 nanoparticles show the gate adsorption at higher pressures while the addition of n-butylamine decreases BET surface area.

    Evaluation of flowability of cohesive powder using the test of powder discharge from an orifice by air flow have been investigated. Three kinds of Calcium hydroxide was used in this study. As the experimental condition, the interstitial air pressure and the initial void fraction were varied. Judgement of the powder discharge was carried out to the continuous discharge and the change of interstitial air pressure. When the initial void fraction was decreased, the high pressure was needed to the beginning of powder discharge from an orifice because of the effect of increased cohesive force between particles. The difference in cohesive force of three powders could be indicated clearly from the relationship between the ration of estimated cohesive force to gravity force and the initial void fraction. As the result, it is supposed that the high flowability of powder was obtained when the ration of cohesive force to gravity force is small.

    Simultaneous ball milling and leaching by sulfuric acid was applied to enhance copper leaching from copper concentrate consisted of chalcopyrite and pyrite with small amount of bornite. When copper leaching was conducted in ball mill with enough air, copper recovery after 96 hours increased to 34.1%, whereas it remained 16.4% in beaker test. Kinetic analysis results showed that leaching rate of chalcopyrite was increased about 100 times in ball milling test than in beaker test. XRD patterns of residue after leaching suggested that crystallinity of chalcopyrite was decreased in ball milling. Furthermore, leaching rate was mostly not increased when the particle size of sample was decreased. From above results, it was supposed that copper leaching with ball milling was enhanced by not only an increase of specific surface area of particles in sample but also low crystallization of chalcopyrite and explosion of new reaction surface of chalcopyrite.

    It is rather costly to simulate granular phenomena by using Discrete Element Method with non-spherical particles. In this article, non-spherical particles were modeled by collectives of spherical particles rigidly connected. We proposean efficient neighbor-particle searching method and an algorithm to improve the computational performance for GPU computing.We demonstrate the difference of the foot stamp in the case of 405,000 tetrahedron-shaped particles from simply spherical particles. The edge of footprint with tetrahedron-shaped particles is clearer due to the enhanced shear frictions of interlocked particles. Confirming the efficacy of GPU acceleration, we perform a large-scale agitation simulation using 300,000 cubic objects on a NVIDIA Tesla K20X and the simulation for 800,000 time steps has completed within 14 hours.
