It is estimated that the collecting characteristics of particles for an electrostatic precipitator (EP) are influenced by the ionic wind (IW) which is caused by the corona discharge. In order to elucidate these influences, this paper is divided into the following three important portions.
(A) IW is classified Positive IW, Negative IW, Secondary IW, Alternating current IW and Reverse ionization IW, and the characteristics of IW depend on these types.
(B) The device of needle toplate type electrode is used as a typical example of EP. The characteristics of Negative IW in this device are measured and are analysed.
(C) The influences of IW in EP are classified the useful effects and the unuseful effects. The former is consisted of four items and the latter is made up of three items.
