This study investigated the ignition temperatures of two types of ammonium dinitramide-based energetic ionic liquids (EILs). One (ADN/HEHN) is a binary mixture comprising of ammonium dinitramide (ADN) and 2-hydroxyethylhydrazinium nitrate (HEHN), and the other is a tertiary mixture of ADN, monomethyl amine nitrate (MMAN), and urea. Two types of ignition sources were used to compare the ignition behaviors of each source. The EILs were ignited by either a current-carrying electrode or an electric furnace with an electrical supply. Temperature variations in the EILs were measured using fine thermocouples. It was found that the ignition temperature of the current-carrying electrode was significantly lower than that of the electric furnace. This can be attributed to the presence of an electrolytic reaction. The EILs ignited when the concentration of the active chemical species from ADN decomposed to a certain amount, due to the progress of both electrolysis and pyrolysis.
