This investigation was carried out using the ESR spin trapping technique to confirm whether uric acid could scavenge oxygen radicals and to clarify what relationship was present between its concentration and scavenging ability.
Oxygen radicals were generated through a hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase reaction system. The ESR spectrum obtained under the controlled conditions confirmed that the signals were of DMPO-O2-and DMPO-OH. When 50 μl of 10 mM uric acid was added into the reaction system, the signal intensities of both DMPO-O2-and DMPO-OH were decreased markedly. The signal intensities obtained by addition of various concentrations of uric acid were gradually decreased as the concentration was elevated.
The results showed that uric acid could play an important role as an oxygen radical scavenger for superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, and that the scavenging ability of uric acid depended on its concentration.

Growth potential of ameloblastomas of the jaws (20 cases) was investigated with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry. These cases were histologically classified into four types: plexiform (10 cases), follicular (6 cases), acanthomatous (3 cases), and granular cell type (1 case). The mean value of the PCNA labeling index in this series was 10.5%(1.6-33.3%). The mean labeling index of the follicular type (17.7±9.1%) was higher than that of the other types, and significant difference (p<0.05) was indicated between follicular type and plexiform type (8.3±4.8%).
PCNA labeling indices of the nine cases treated by marsupialization were followed up. The labeling indices decreased in five cases, but the other four cases showed increase of the labeling indices.
As a result, it was considered that close attention should be paid to the follow-up after marsupialization of ameloblastoma, because the proliferating behavior of the tumor may vary after this surgical intervention.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the fatigue characteristics of the motor units in the human masseter muscle. Eight asymptomatic subjects were asked to maintain isometric clenching of fatiguing tasks at various force levels, and electromyographic signals were taken from the surface of the right masseter muscle. The endurance time was measured, and the following parameters were calculated. The results were as follows:
    1) At 10% of maximum voluntary contraction force level, all subjects could complete their tasks. The endurance time become shorter as the force levels became higher.
    2) While the mean frequency decreased steadily at the end of a sustained isometric contraction, no significant difference was observed between the root mean square values at the beginning and the end.
    3) Turns per second decreased significantly at the end of contraction, while the mean amplitude per turn increased significantly, especially at the higher force levels.
    4) It has been considered that turns per second reflect firing rates of a toral number of motor units, and that the mean amplitude per turn reflects the largest peak-to-peak amplitude among motor units recruited. Therefore, it was assumed that the firing rates of the motor units decreased and larger spikes were recruited in voluntary isometric contractions of the fatigued human masseter, and that the motor units were frequently synchronized at the higher force levels.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) cannon-invasivelymonitor concentration changes of oxyhemoglobin (HbO2), deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) and total hemoglobin (Total Hb) in the tissue under various conditionssuch as hypoxia and ischemia. HbO2, Hb, and Total Hb in both non-irradiated (control group) and irradiated (experimental group) mandibular bones of rabbits under the treatments ofhypoxia and common carotid arterial occlusion were measured by NIRS, and the conclusions wereas follows:
    1. Changes of HbO2, Hb, and Total Hb in thecontrol group were similar to those in previous reports on those obtained frommuscles and brains, indicating that NIRS can monitor oxygenation states in mandibular bone.
    2. In the experimental group, reductionof oxidative metabolism in mandibular bone and decrease of inflow of blood intomandibular bone were demonstrated. Theresults indicated that, by using NIRS, it will be possibleto obtain a lot of useful information forthe criterion of imnairment after irradiation and forthe prehension of recovery after treatment.

An uncommon case of dens invaginatus of the maxillary third molar was reported. The patient was 29-year-old female who complained of pain and swelling in the region of the left maxillary third molar. She had no systemic disease and familial history there of. The tooth was finally extracted. It is now generally agreed that the dens invaginatus is formed as a result of invagination of the coronal enamel with dentin into the pulp canal on one tooth germ. Thus continuity between inner tooth enamel and outer tooth enamel is necessary for the diagnosis of dens invaginatus. Continuity of enamel was found in the morphological examination and X-ray film and penetrated the periodontal ligament. These findings were diagnosed as dens invaginatus which was a type-3 according to Oehler's classification.

The tongue flap is an excellent donor for reconstruction after resection of cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, and lip. Twenty-seven patients having oral carcinoma reconstructed with the tongue flap were reviewed. According to primary tumor sites, 27 patients were divided into two groups; 16 patients of the tongue cancer group and 11 patients of the non-tongue cancer group.
In the tongue cancer group, there were five cases of postcrior-based flap, 4 of anteriorbased flap, and 7 of rotation flap. The posterior-based and antetior-based flaps were used for repair after partial glossectomy for T1 or T2 carcinoma, particularly endophytic tumors, and the rotation flaps for patients with T2 or T3 carcinoma required hemiglossectomy. In addition, 10 of 16 patients underwent neck dissection simultaneously. All patients in the tongue cancer group had no speech and swallowing difficulties and limitation of diet.
The tongue flaps for defects after resection of non-tongue carcinomas, including the lower gingiva, floor of the mouth, and buccal mucosa, were used in more advanced cases. Ten (90.9%) of 11 patients in the non-tongue cancer group underwent simultaneous neck dissection. Moderate speech difficulties were found in 4 patients who underwent reconstruction after resection of the anterior portion of the oral cavity involving suprahyoid muscles, thus speech difficulties are related more to the tongue mobility than to the tongue size. Eight patients had limitation of diet due to not only resection of the mandible but also the bulky flap on the denture-bearing area, which resulted in subsequent difficulty in wearing the conventional denture.

Actinomycosis is an unusual bacterial infection that has recently become a rare condition due to wide use of various antibiotics. The diagnosis of the disease may often be difficult, when clinical symptoms are not typical. It is important to differentiate this disease from a tumor. Thus, a reliable diagnostic modality is required.
Two cases of actinomycosis (57 year-old male and 52 year-old female) were reported. In both cases, several imaging modalities were used to assist in making the diagnosis. Especially on MRI, we obtained interesting findings.
A defect of the lateral cortical plate of the mandible and remarkable subperiosteal abscess formation were detected on MR, which are considered to be characteristic findings as Actinomycosis, because such findings are rarely seen in the other usual bacterial infections. Affected bone marrow demonstrated lower intensity on T1WI, and heterogeneously intermediate to high intensity on T2WI.
Post contrast-enhanced fat suppression T1WI by means of the chemical shift method, clearly showed high signal lesion inside the masseter muscle, indicating active infiltration into muscles.
Image findings of actinomycosis does not make the specific diagnosis but helps to make a diagnosis of this disease by combining multiple imaging modalities.

Carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor, which comprises approximately 4.6 % of all malignant salivary gland tumors. The carcinomatous components in those tumors are mainly composed of undifferentiated carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, but it is reported that other carcinomas could occur in pleomorphic adenoma. In this report, an extremely rare case of carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma that had a carcinomatous area composed of malignant myoepithelioma was presented.
A 56-year-old female was visited our hospital with the chief complaint of a left soft palate swelling on May 27, 1994. The tumor had been previously excised at an other hospital, when the patient was 15 and 54 years old. The previous pathological diagnosis was pleomorphic adenoma at 54 years old. Based on the clinical diagnosis of salivary gland tumor, surgical operation was performed on June 14. The tumor microscopically consisted of two distinct components. One showed typical pleomorphic adenoma and the other revealed solid or cordlike proliferation of spindle-shaped or clear cells. These solid cells were immunohistochemically positive for S-100 and PK and had diastase-soluble PAS-positive granules in their cytoplasm, which indicated that the tumor was malignant myoepithelioma arising in pleomorphic adenoma. The patient had no local recurrence or distant metastasis for three years after surgical operation.

A relatively rare case of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma occured in the mandible of 5.8-year-old male. He was referred to our clinical office for uneruption of FE and 1-6 with painless swelling in that area.
According to the X-ray examination, a nonuniform radiopaque mass was found in the left mandible, and E and 6 were impacted beneath the mass.
    The clinical diagnosis was odontoma.
The impacted teeth E and 6 were separated from the mass easily, so they were conserved.
Three years have passed since the operation, and these teeth have risen to the normal position in the dentition with the aid of orthodontic treatment.
Histopathologically, there was a matrix similar to ameloblastic fibroma. In the matrix of the tumor, hard segments, dentin-like, cementum-like, and bone-like tissues, were included.
Thus it was diagnosed as ameloblastic fibro-odontoma.
According to the special staining, it is found that the hyaluronic acid and glycogen were the tumor products in the tumor mucous.
