    Calculating the catch per one net from the yearly amount of the herring catch in Hokkaido, we find that the former is inversely proportional to the number of the nets and that there seems to be shorter periods of 3_??_4 years, 6_??_7 years and 10_??_11 years and longer periods (covering the shrter periods) of more than 30 years in the fluctnation of the yearly catch.

    The present paper deals with the chemical constituents in the bone of shark.
    The results obtained are summerized as follows.
    Water Ash Dry matter Ca/Ash
    Skull 77.11±1.37% 30.96±1.17% 36.78±0.95%
    Spine 60.99±1.49% 54.45±1.15% 37.95±0.12%
    From the data above-mentioned, it seems that no significant difference exists between the mineral constituent of the bone of shark and other animals.

    The living bivalves have the 3 forces concerning to close the valves: namely the closing force of adductor muscle, the opening force of ligament of valves and the adhesive force of adductor muscle to the shells.
    The closing force of adductor muscle decreases gradually as temperature rises and becomes minimum at about 70°C and increases as temperature rises higher until the shell opens. The force of ligament increases by degrees as temperature rises so as to open the valves. The adhesive force of adductor muscle to the shell is exceedingly strong in lower temperatures but it decreases as temperature rises so far as the shell opens. The sementing substance between the adductor muscle and the shell dissolves at length completely by prolonged boiling.
    The results of my observations and experiments show that when the closing force of adductor muscle or the opening force of ligament exceeds the adhesive force of adductor muscle to the shell the adductor muscle comes off from one side of the valves, which open widely at last.

    Some types of Gloiopeltis furcata and G. tenax have paraspore, and tetraspores on the same frond. Spermatids, carpogons and carpospores are not found in these types. The groups of paraspores are very similar to the cystocarps in appearance, but they are formed asexually. The fronds from paraspores also have paraspores and tetraspores; i. e. in these types no alternation of generations occurs.

    Taking two species of saldine, Saldinia melanostica and Engraulis japonica the denaturation of meat was studied by measuring the ammonia content which was formed in the elaption of preservation time. The result of experiments shows that (1) in salt cured meat of newly caught fish ammonia content reaches to ca, 30mg. % in about ten hours after fishing, (2) in salt cured and acidified meat it docs earlier and in larger quantity, (3) in salt cured and alkalinised meat it does rather slowhy and in smaller quantity, (4) in the salt cured whole body of Engraulis japonica it is reverse (it may be due to the existence of intestines), (5) rapid ammonia formation takes place when phosphoglyceric acid diminishes, (6) ammonia which is once formed disappears changing to amide type when glycolysis occurs, it looks like iufluenced by the reaction at that time.

    In order to prevent the growth of water-mold when the eggs of Osmerus dentex are being hatched, it gives very satisfactory results to use the sea-water containing salinity of 8.816%. (w. t. 13.08°C)-10.13% (w. t. 15.68°C). By, means of laying a hatching-box in the mouth of a river, the growth of water-mold on the eggs can be prevented with ease, and consequently the rate of their hatching can be raised. On the other hand I have made an experiment of the resisting power of water-mold to sea-water.

    In order to estimate the survival rate, Lea's method has been used hitherto. But this method is not justified by the stochastics in the point of view of smll sample, therefore errored results may be derived if the “size of sample” is small. Now in this paper, a stochastic method applicable to larger size of sample than 30 is obtained from the Central Limmit Theorem.

    The said problem is studied half-quantitatively by the Torsion-balance method which was reported in this Jonrnal (13, (1), 24, 1937) by one of the authors.1)
    It may be said that when fish-oil is contact with such substances as is considered to be easily affected by microorganisms, e. g. casein, glycine, cystine and NH4Cl, it will cause strong discoloration, but when with substances, considered to be hardly affected, e g. gelatin, starch and NaCl, there occures very weak discoloration, or not at all. So the cause of discoloration of fish-oil may be the volatile N-compd. as has ever been thought by some of the researchers.2)
    There is no direct relation between the rancidity and discoloration of fish-oil.

    The proteolytic activity of the pancreas extracts of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) was examined by the method described in Pharmacopoeia of Japan. The fresh pancreas had no proteolytic activity. By the autolysis at 40°C the pancreas became active. If we define that the digestion power is expressed by the ratio of the amount of casein, which is digested clearly and pancreas used (both as dry matter), the experimented digestion power was 1 after 3 hour's autolysis, 2.5 after 12-36 hrs. (max. value) and decreased again to 1 after 48 hrs. The activation occured in the same way and almost in the same degree, both in new tral and acidic (pH 5.4) medium.
    The activity was compared with that of cattle pancreas in the same way. The digestion power of the latter was 25 after 12 hour's autolysis at 40°C.
    Farthermore the digestion power of the pancreas of the whale was compared with that of cattle after autolysis overnight at room temperature (i. e. 20hrs. at 2°C-8°C) The former had no activity. The digestion power of the latter was 50. Both preparations that had been autolysed at room temperature overnight was dried by acetone, powdered and passed through a sieve of 60 mesh, and its digestion power was examined. The digestion power of those dried preparations was 2.5 in the case of the whale's pancreas and 125 in the case of the cattle pancreas.

    On 6th of October, 1933 the author released Mactra sachalinensis of the size, length 8.5cm high 7.1cm with description tag at the shore of Osyamanbe, Yamakoshigun, Hokkaido and recaptured the same at this shore on 10th of February, 1948 with the size of length 11.5cm high 9.2cm.
    According to our investigation of the growth of this kind of shell at the year of 1945, the one length 8.5cm can be regarded 12 years old, therefore it can be confirmed that above recaptured shell already has been kept life of 26 years as this one passed 14 years 4 months since released.

    In the persence of various antioxydants, we found that vitamin A destruction was roughly proportional to the peroxide formation in the same cod liver oil. But pyrogallol acted differently. It retarded the formation of peroxide, while it unaffected to the vitamin A destruction.

    At the alkali digestion of whale liver, we added the various amounts of hydroquinone and zinc powder.
    From our study, it is favorable to use 1% zinc powder. Hydroquinone unaffected to the vitamin potency, for it was destroyed rapidly in the alkali medium.
