    The authors reported the experience to observe bonito school under a drifting timber, with other kinds of fishes, such as yellow fin, common dolphin, trigger fish, spanish mackerel etc, by following them on board of fishing boat for 20 hours. By sudden change of weather the boat went another way from the timber, but after 28 hours a part of the fishes was found under the boat.
    In this paper is stated the observation in the course and some ecological consideration. Though it is said in Japan for the reason of bonito to school about the drifting timber in surface of oceanic waters that “they like to be in shadow” or “there are plenty of small fishes as food of it”, in this paper is stated that these reasons are not complete for the habitude.

    The author described morphologically in the main the seven juveniles of Pointed-tailed Ocean Sunfish, Masturus lanceolatus, 22.5-77.5mm in body length without caudal fin, found in the stomach of Seerfish, Acanthocybium solandri, caught. off the Minamidaito Is1. June 28, 1949.
    This juvenile is supposed to be bottom animal feeder, as an individual of 37mm long had the Stomach full of some Annelida, and 70mm long one, full of some Sponge.
    The juvenile of this species was already reported by Gudger, E. W. and others, but this is the first report concerning the waters arround Japan.

    The toxicity of S. vermicularis radiatus has been determined. (Tab. I and II)
    The ovary showed high toxicity, but the testis seems to be very weakly poisonous. For the higher toxicity of skin attention must be paid in the processing of this pfuffer.
    This pfuffer may be determined to have similar toxicity as S. vermicularis vermicularis, corresponding to the biological classification.

    (i) In the preliminary experiment, the potency of mixed whale-liver oil (mixture of Fin whale- and Blue whale-liver oil) was tested according to the observation of the increase in body weight. The biological potency of original oil and its distilled oil indicated one half of the value obtained by spectro-photometric observation.
    (ii) The potency of Blue whale-liver oil was determined quantitatively. The biological vitamin A potency of original oil and distilled oil corresponded to 55.6% and 65.7% respectively of the value estimated physico-chemically with Beckman spectro-photometer.
    (iii) At the end of the experiment, vitamin A and Kitol in the livers and faeces of the animals were extracted with soybean oil, and E value at 328 mμ and 290 mμ of the wave length were estimated with spectro-photometer. No difference between the groups fed on whale-liver oil and fish-liver oil was observed.
    (iv) Death rate and severe eye diseases of animals were discussed. There was no significant difference between the groups administered with whale-liver oil and standard fish-liver oil.

    1. The writer isolated two causative tbermophilic anaerobes from the swelled canned foods which contain potato and dried egg powder etc.
    2. The two strains were determined clostridium thermosacchorolyticum N. Sp. on these morpbological and physiological characters.
    3. The anti-serum aganist the two strains were produced from the rabbits. It was found that two strains were not strictly same species but very resemble.
    4. One similar strain was isolated from the other canned vegetables and seven strains were isolated from the 14 soilsamples by the agglutinative reaction using the anti-serum.

    (1). The optimum growth temperature of the thermophilic anaerobes that were previously reported was 55-60°C. Spores germinated at 37°C after 10-12 days, but almost did not at 30°C.
    (2). The anaerobes grew at pH 4.7-pH 7.7, with the optimum pH 5.0-7.2, and did not grow in the more concentrated medium than 4.0% NaCl and 30% sucrose.
    (3). Heat resistance of the spore was indicated at Fig. 1. The mean of temperature coefficient (Q10) was 11.4.
    (4). The resistance against refrigeration of the spores was strong. Heat resistance after freezing was weaker than not frozen spores.
  • (第二報)溶血度曲線と赤血球抵抗力との關係に就いて

    It was reported in the previous paper that the blood corpuscle resistance decreased in dyspnoea of fishes. After then the experiment to study the relation between the blood corpuscle resistance and the haemolygram was carried out and the following results were obtained.
    1) Blood corpuscle resistance decreased in the fish taken out of the water and exposed to the air, while the resistance increased in the fish poisoned by CuSO4 solution.
    2) The haemolygram of Cvprinus carpio takes the form resembling S in shape.
    3) The surface of erythrocyte sediment can be observed below 90% of haemolytic rate.
    4) It can be said that the haemolygram in its figure shifts to the left, when the blood corpuscle resistance increased, and on the contrary, to the right, when the resistance decreased.
    5) In fish the inclination of the normal haemolygram is generally steeper than that of the abnormal one.
    For the judgment on the cause of death in fishes the haemolygram is as useful as the blood corpuscle resistance.

    In the present paper, the following points were especially attended.
    1). The seasonal succession of the plants. And it was observed that the Z. marina flourish during the early spring and the early summer, make flowers open in the early summer, and go to decay from the midsummer till the late autumn. The Z. nana flourish during the late spring and the late autumn, go to decay in the winter, and make flowers open twice in a year, in the late spring and the late autumn.
    2). The seeds germinate, in the sea, after the dormancy of several months. The seedlings appear abundantly in the early spring in Z. marina, and in the late spring in the Z. nana. The dilute sea water (5-10 cl.) make the germination of seed easy, while it seems to be harmful for the seedling.
