Experiments have been worked on the reserch of reaction to light in some fresh. water fishes, relating to the effect of fishing lamp.
In fishes swimming toward light and passing through the net, which was set across in the aquarium. The number of them (Y) observed as a criterion of attraction, and the results were obtained about the relation between (Y) and the intensity or wave length of lights.
The relation between (Y) and intensity of light (I) is graphically represented by Fig 2 and it may be given by the formula, a(logI•t-P)+Q in which t, is time and, a, is constant.
In each filtered wave lengths (W), a is a rerative stimulating value and it is different in each species of fishes.
The relation a or (K) to (W) may be given by the formula, a=±d(logw-n)+C, in which d is constant in each species of fishes.
So the attractive value by lights may be given by the formula Y={±d(low-n)+C} {logI-P}+Q.

We had an experiment done off Naruto of Awaji Island of Hyogo prefecture in summer 1949, by means of the Matuda fishing electric lamp and a purse seine.
In most cases of practicess, the shoal is composed of “Katakutiiwasi” Engraulis japonicus (T. &. S.) and “Maaji” Trach ?? rus japonicus (T. &. S.).
Prior to starting this experiment, we measure the illumination in several directions by means of the Matuda lux meter and determine the vertical distribution curve of the source.
Hanging down the source attaching on the boardside, we measure the visible depth of Secchi disk placed vertically beneath the source.
After a few hours, fishes densely crowded, we measure vertically and horizontally the range of the crowding and then the pursing is completed.
From these measurements, the following data is obtained.
    1. Tiding, must be in strict connection with the shoal crowding, especially the course of southeasterlcurrent is unfavourable for the number of the shoal toward the lamp.
    2. Comparing the shoal in the cases of “Katakutiiwasi” with that of “Maaji”, we know that the depth of the upper limit of “Maaji” is lower than that of “Katakutiiwasi” (the depth of the upper limitis same to the lamp). but in the case of “Maaji” only, the upper limit of the shoal is same to the depth of the lamp.
    3. The depth of the upper limit of the shoal of “Katakutiiwasi” in the moon light is lower than that in the dark.
    4. In the case of “Katakuti-iwasi”, if the depth of the lower limit of the crowding vertically under the source and the number of fishes composing the shoal are expressed by d and v respectively, v∞d1.5.

Recently, one species of the genus Argulus is propagating in the salmonoid fishcul-ture ponds of every locality of Japan. The author studied the scientific characters of this species by using the many specimens which were collected from Salvelinus fontinalis, Salmo irideus and Plecoglossus altivelis at the fishcoulture ponds in Tokyo, Nagano and he recognized that they are well agreement with the description of A. coregond Thorell, 1865 by Tokioka (1936) and also that of A. plecoglossi Yamaguti, 1937 by Yamaguchi (1937). But the writer identified them with A. coregoni Thorell, because the identifica-tion seems to be very reasonable. The characters of those specimens are figured in the Figs. 1-3.

As is well known, pyroligneous acid solution has an antiseptic effect on food storage. In the present study this antiseptic effect was bacteriologically investigated on typical 8 species or 8 strains of the aerobic saprophytes-the bactericidal ability, bacteriostatic concentrations of pyroligneous acid and its bactericidal agents were examined.
For measuring the antibiotic action on these organisms, the pyroligneous acid solution which is the by-product of charcoal destructive distillation was used; with the result that this pyroligneous acid possessed apparently antibiotic action on these organisms. Considering with the data obtained, the agents of bactericidal and bacteriostatic action of pyroligneous acid appear to be not contributed with the only effect of pH or undisossiated molecule of acetic acid.

According to the growth taken from back calculation basing on scales gathered from various localities of Japan, it seems that the sardines found in Japanese waters belong to single stock.
Remarkably enough the fishes obtained from Kushikino, South Kyushyu have scales in which the spans between first and second annual rings, as well as between second and third ones are found much wider than those found in scale-samples of any other localities in both third and fourth year classes.
Accordingly it may be said that the stock found at Kushikino forms a local population.

The resting zone of the scale of this fish seems to be formed during June to August in rather young specimens of about 21cm long, in which the scales are provided with 1 or 2 resting zones. But this fact is not ascertained yet in specimens larger, than those given above.
The growth obtained from the scale analysis differs by localities from which the materials are taken, viz, the growth of the fish collected from Tokyo Bay and. its adjacent waters is smaller than that of the fish secured from the Inland Sea Harimanada, but larger than that of the fish taken from Sanriku, Pacific Ocean. Whilst the average body-lengths led from back-calculation basing on scale are as follows, l1=21, l2=32, l3=42, l4=50, 15=55cm.

Regardless of any factors appearing on scale, such as distinctness of resting zones, difference of distance between resting zones and density of distribution of circuli, the ranges between the focus and each resting zone have measured dealing with abundance of scales taken from numerous individuals landed at Fukuoka and Tokyo fish-markets.
With regard to each material classified by age and localities from which the specimens examined were obtained, number of resting zones, appearing in the area increased in a year is from 1 to 5, 2 on average in both first and second areas. The limit of the area is determined by the distance between peaks which appear on the frepuency distribution curves of distance from the focus of scale in relation to the scale-length. Basing on scale analysis, the calculated body-length coresponding to each of the peak is 12, 18, 22, , 25cm respectively. This result agrees with that taken by M. Yamamoto. Finally it should be noted that the stock of this fish trawled in the East China Sea and landed at Fukuoka fish market is chiefly composed of fishes of 2-and 3-Years old. These fishes occupy about 80% of the total catch.

Some experiments were carried out to apply Nessler's colorimetric method as a simple device for measuring the quantities of ammonia in fish meat.
It was found that the colour reaction by Nessler's reagent for extracts of fish meat, does not indicate characteristic colour which is to be induced by ammonia, but colours differently; and it was shown that some substances which obstruct Nessler's reaction are removed by adding the adsorbent which does not influence ammonia in acidified solutions.
Therefore, Nessler's method may be adapted as a simpiem method for the estimation of ammonia in fish meat, by the following items:
    1) treating the aqueous extracts of fish meat with protein-precipitants charged with definite acidity and adsorbent,
    2) changing, alkali earth metal ions into complex ions, dissolved out to filtrate from adsorbent,
    3) preparing a durable standard solution.

The estimation of the number of hatches of migratory fishes has hitherto been made by summing up the yearly catches of the fishes which belong to a certain year class. In applying this procedure the age composition of catches must be detected and, therefore, considerable amount of work is demanded for obtaining the result required. In this paper, the writer gives a new method for treating this problem, which, though essentially the same as is the case with the above mentioned method, deals with the problem in the form of integral equation. According to this method, the result required can be arrived by using merely the successive data of the total number of annual catches of the fish under considera-tion and the computations are carried out graphically instead of lengthy arithmetic calcula-tions. The theory is applied to the case of the spring herring in the Hokkaidõ waters, resulting good, agreements in general characters with the results already been obtained by the older schemes.
