    1) Of fish which feeds on organisms with chitinous shells, such as shrimps and most zooplanktons, the chitinolytic activties in the stomach were found to be high at the cardiac part and in the blind sac of the stomach but comparatively low at the pyrolic part.
    2) The chitinolytic activty in the stomach of Konosirus punctatus, or Mugil cephalus, which feeds mainly on phytoplankton in sea water or detritus and microbenthos on bottom muds were low or negligible.
    3) Of Pagrus major and Trachurus japonicus, the mastication and digetion of Metapenaeus joyneri and its course in the digestive tract was examined. The mastication and digestion of the foods in digestive tracts of these fishes are further discussed.

    The distribution of the sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus intermedius, with successive developmental processes of its life cycle was observed by SCUBA diving at the rocky shore of Ikantai, southern Hokkaido, from August 1966 until November 1968. This shore, supporting the echinoid population, consisted of an extensive flat rock, a boulder field, an eelgrass area, and a sandy area, and was classified into five major habitats according to the nature of the bottom. The boulder field supported more than 90% of the sea urchin population, and this zone was a major habitat for the sea urchin. The flat rock area and the eelgrass one were nearly valueless areas as habitat for the sea urchin. Almost all individuals belonging to larval and young urchins were most dense at the field of small boulders. The 2-year old urchins were also more abundant in this boulder field than in the others, but they dispersed gradually toward the field with large boulders from late spring to late fall. The field with large boulders was appraised as a major habitat for the adult urchins older than 3 years old. Some members of the adult urchins, during the cold months, extended their sphere over the field covered with small boulders. However, during the rest of the year, they were clumped within the large boulder field.

    The bio-economy of the natural population of Strongylocentrotus intermedius, based on the census of the sea urchin and the seaweeds by means of quadrat work, was studied at the rocky shoal of Ikantai, southern Hokkaido.
    The balance sheet of population metabolism expressed as a unit of dry matter or of nitrogen for the echinoid population was that of the credit side of the balance, where 60.7g/m2/yr or 1.1g-nitrogen/m2/yr was initial biomass; 43.1g/m2/yr or 1.3g-nitrogen/m2/yr was population growth; 46.4g/m2/yr or 0.9g-nitrogen/m2/yr was immigration; and only 0.14g/m2/yr or 0.003g-nitrogen/m2/yr was recruitment. This sum total was divided into the following way on the debit side of the balance, loss of population due to emigration and natural mortality was 72.6g/m2/yr or 1.6g-nitrogen/m2/yr; gametes ejected were 2.9g/m2/yr or 0.2g-nitrogen/m2/yr; and final biomass was 51.3g/m2/yr or 0.9g-nitrogen/m2/yr.
    Since the population growth of the sea urchin has been sponsored by 412.4g/m2/yr or 8.0g-nitrogen/m2/yr of Laminaria angustata and by 12.2g/m2/yr or 0.5g-nitrogen/m2/ /yr of Ulva pertusa, growth coefficient was about 10% in dry matter and production efficiency was about 4% in dry matter.
    The annual food consumption of the echinoid population corresponds to about half of the annual growth (production) of the seaweed community.

    The Tanoura fishfarm, located on the southern coast of Syozu-sima in Kagawa Prefecture, has a long bay-mouth stretch (about 560m wide) and is partitioned with double sheets of netting. The water area and its volume are 16.4×104m2 and 166×104m3, respectively, at high tide. In 1965, 46×104 fish (Hamachi, the young of Seriola quinqueradiata) were stocked initially and 42×104 of fish harvested.
    On the whole, sea water (the upper layer) flows into the farm and from the flshfarm the lower layer flows out through the western half of the netting fence, but the water is little exchanged through the eastern half. Surface currents flowing into the farm through the western half of the netting fence run directly to the interior, but the current through the middle part makes an eastward turn. In the eastern region of the farm the current flows veryslowly.
    The quantity of sea water exchanged is about 56×104m3 during half a tidal cycle in the neap tide. On the basis of the water exchange rate during the neap tide, it may be estimated that the optimum number of Hamachi stocked in the Tanoura fishfarm amounts to 40×104, late in August, when each Hamachi weighs about 400g.
    The results are discussed with due consideration given to the growth rates of Hamachi cultured in this farm for the past several years.

    1. Distribution of histidine deaminase and urocanase in various tissues of carp was examined. High histidine deaminase activity was found in the liver, and low activity in the kidney and spleen but not in the heart and muscle. Urocanase activity in the liver tissue was higher than that in the kidney.
    2. Carp fed on 5% casein diet for 2 weeks gave the low levels of liver histidine deaminase and urocanase, compared with the fish on 80% casein diet. Supplementation of 2.7% of histidine to the low protein diet caused the appreciable elevation of both the enzyme levels.
    3. Liver histidine deaminase and urocanase of carp fasting for 2 weeks showed the higher activities per unit weight than those of the fish on the high protein diet but there were no differences in the activities of whole liver tissue between these fish.

    The properties of coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, oil were studied. Fatty acid composition of coelacanth oil was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatograph using a hydrogen ionization detector on a DEGS column.
    The general fatty acid composition was as follows; saturated fatty acids 19.0% (C10: 0.2%, C12: 0.2%, C13: 0.8%, C14: 2.7%, C15: 0.7%, C16: 10.6%, C18: 2.9%, C19: 0.9%), and unsaturated fatty acids 81.0% (C10-1: 0.1%, C12-1: 0.1%, C14-1: 1.2%, C14-2: 1.0%, C16-1: 4.9%, C16-2: 0.9%, C16-3: 0.8%, C18-1: 24.4%, C18-2: 1.4%, C18-3: 1.1%, C18-4: 2.9%, C20-1: 3.5%, C20-2: 1.5%, C20-4: 1.9%, C20-5: 8.1%, C22-1: 3.2%, C22-5: 4.6%, C22-6: 19.4%).
    The most prominent was monoenoic C18 acid 23.4%, followed by hexaenoic C22, acid 20.4%, saturated C16 acid 10.6% and pentaenoic C20 acid 8.1%.

    In the previous paper, it was reported that the elution patterns by gel filtration of fresh fish muscle protein extracts showed peaks of actomyosin and myogen and that of fresh rabbit muscle protein extract showed peaks of myosin and myogen, and that these elution patterns may provide useful information on the composition of each of the proteins.
    This paper deals with our attempt in gel filtration to follow the development of denaturation or insolubilization of muscle protein during cold storage. Samples used were muscles of yellowtail (“buri”), Seriola quinqueradiata, sea bass (“suzuki”), Lateolabrax japonicus, and rabbit, and these muscles were stored at -20°C for up to five months. The muscle protein extracts with KCI-phosphate buffer (I=0.5, pH 7.2) were subjected to gel filtration on a Sepharose 2 B column.
    The elution patterns obtained by gel filtration of fish muscle protein extracts showed peaks of actomyosin (P1) and myogen (P3). During the cold storage, the size of peak P1 decreased steadily, but that of P3 showed no changes (Figs. 1 and 3). For rabbit muscle, however, the elution pattern of protein extract of unfrozen muscle showed peaks of myosin (P2) and myogen (P3), and that of frozen-stored muscle showed P1 and P3. During the cold storage, decrease in the size of P1 was observed, but no changes in that of P3 was observed (Fig. 4). Ultracentrifugal sedimentation patterns of these protein extracts revealed the trend similar to the above-mentioned results obtained by gel filtration (Figs. 2 and 5). The amounts of eluted actomyosin by gel filtration indicated sharper decrease during cold storage than that of extractable myofibrillar proteins fractionated by a usual dilution-precipitation method (I = 0.05) (Tables 1 and 2). These results indicate that actomyosin in muscle protein extracts is a protein which is insolubilized during frozen-storage.

    A series of experiments was conducted on the effect of chemical agents on the activity of enzyme preparation from the skins of red fishes.
    1. A marked inhibitory effect was observed with fat-soluble antioxidants, particularly with BHA and BHT.
    2. Almost none of effect was seen with ascorbic acid and its isomers or sodium salts. However, reducing agents such as pyrogallol and hydroquinone showed strong inhibition.
    3. A weak effect of inhibition was observed with neutral salts at higher concentrations.
    4. Potassium cyanide, followed by mercuric chloride, indicated strog inhibition among the enzyme inhibitors tested.
    5. The most active inhibitor was stannous chloride in the metallic salts so far tested. But, copper and iron salts, in particular copper salts, gave a promotive effect.

    On account of the necessity to extract or separate carbonyl compounds from sea urchin gonads and fish eggs without changing their properties, the gas liquid chromatographic figures of carbonyls in these eggs, obtained by the ordinary steam-distilling method, was examined. In this examination the N2 gas bubbling method, a method of clear trichloro-acetic acid solution after removal of the protein and the newly devised 80% ethyl-alcohol extracting method, were compared.
    In addition to the above a simultaneous determination method of total carbonyl and oxoacid in fish eggs was investigated.
    The results are as follows;
    1) A fairly large amount of acetaldehyde, and a small amount of acetone and crotonaldehyde, were produced. On the other hand iso-valeraldehyde or 3-methyl butylaldehyde decreased during steam-distillation.
    2) Acetaldehyde was also produced by heating under N2 aeration, but iso-valeraldehyde or 3-methyl butylaldehyde did not decrease.
    3) A small amount of threonine, together with glucose, decomposed to acetaldehyde during steam-distillation.
    4) Recoveries of total carbonyl and oxo-acid contents in fish eggs determined by the newly devised method, were 92% on the average. The total carbonyl and oxo-acid content of sea urchin gonads frozen at -10±3°C for three months, was about three times as much as the value of walleye pollock eggs and rainbow trout eggs stored under same conditions.
