    The paper deals with growth and the egg carrying period of the “Hokkai-ebi”, Pandalus kessleri CZERNIAVSKI, collected from the Yamada Bay, Iwate Prefecture, the area recognized as the southern limit of the dsitribution of this species. The relationship among the total, body and carapace lengths can be expressed by a linear equation. The weight-length relationships were also observed essentially as straight lines on a log scale.
    The prawns soon after hatching were 8.3mm in average body length in March, and grew to 59.1mm 12 months after and 88.7mm 24 months after. It is certain that the growth of the prawn is almost arrested during winter. As compared with the Hokkaido data, the growth in the area of the present study appears better over that of the Notsuke Bay, but is not so good as that of the Akkeshi Bay.
    It seems that the prawn lay their eggs in the middle or the end of October, carry them over winter, and hatch them from late March to early April. So the egg carrying period was estimated to be five months or six months. This result is shorter than that of the Hokkaido study. The product of time and water temperature of the carrying period in the Yamada Bay was similar to that of the Hokkaido area.

    It is apparent from the former that the albacore is hooked after completion of the sinking of the long-line. In order to further examine the vertical distribution of albacore, a fishing experiment was made by using many baskets of efficient vertical long-lines.
    The results are summarized as follows;
    1) Average time taken for hauling of the vertical long-line continuously, was 3.5 minutes, a little more than that of the deep-sea long-line.
    2) In tests of hooked rate, there was no significant difference between the vertical long-line and the long-line.
    3) The vertical distribution of albacore catch by the vertical long-line showed a similar tendency with the results reported in the former paper, i.e., the highest hooked rate was 2.2-2.7% at 200-300m layer, and the 1.2% at 380m layer was higher than that at the 150 m layer.
    4) The greater catch of bigeye tuna at 300m layer, especially in comparison within other layers, the yellowfin tuna catch at 200-300m layer and the marlins catch at 150-300m layer, were obtained in this fishing experiment. These facts exhibit that the vertical distributions of tunas and marlins are quite wide.

    It is a laborious and time-consuming procedure to estimate the true digestibility of dietary proteins in fish by the ordinary digestion trial. In the present study, a diet containing chromic oxide as an indicator was used for determining the metabolic fecal nitrogen and true digestibility of dietary proteins. The fecal collection was made using the apparatus devised by OGINO and CHEN after supplying diet regularly for 3 days. The metabolic nitrogen excretion of carp was determined for diets containing varying levels of white fish meal. The equation, y=0.087+0.101x, was obtained expressing the relation between fecal nitrogen (gN/100g diet), y, and dietary nitrogen (%), x. The true digestibility can be obtained by correcting for metabolic nitrogen in feces without measuring food intake or feces output. The apparent digestibility of white fish meal-protein changed according to the protein level, but the true digestibility showed a constant value regardless of the protein content of the diet.

    In the methanolic extract from a red alga Grateloupia turuturu, L-methionine-l-sulfoxide, an unknown base and glutamic acid were predominant among free amino acids. On acid hydrolysis, the first two compounds disappeared and arginine, citrulline, ornithine and methionine appeared or increased concomitantly. Two methionine derivatives were then isolated from the extract by ion-exchange column chromatography, and identified as L-methionine-l-sulfoxide and N-methylmethionine sulfoxide by synthesis. The former sulfoxide was confirmed to be the origin of methionine appearing on acid hydrolysis.

    The action of L-thyroxin (T4) on the dimorphic character of Endomycopsis fibuligera EC4 (IFO) was studied. The most remarkable effect of T4 was observed to be the increase in the growth of yeast-like cells in 0.1M NaCl medium, but not in salt-free medium. However, similar effects were not observed when LiCl or MgCl2 replaced NaCl. The promotive effect of T4 on the growth of yeast-like cells in saline medium was not influenced by the addition of Cu2+ or SeO42- but coexistence with 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) could significantly enhance the promotive effect. Similar enhancement was observed when methionine was used instead of TTC. On the basis of these readily produced effects of T4 on the dimorphic changes of yeast, it was suggested that the action of T4 must be concerned with the regulation mechanism of sulfhydryl metabolism under saline conditions.

    The effect of dietary thiamine nitrate on the growth of rainbow trout and sea bream fed raw anchovy was investigated. The thiamine used in this experiment was coated with fat in order to prevent its decomposition by thiamininase present in raw anchovy. The feeding periods were 118 and 20 days for rainbow trout and sea bream, respectively. In both species, the weight gain was greater in fish on a thiamine-supplemented diet than in those on a diet without the vitamine. In rainbow trout, the thiamine concentration in the liver of the latter group gradually decreased, while blood pyruvic acid levels increased. In young sea bream, the thiamine content in muscle of the thiamine-deficient group decreased to levels as low as 40% of the initial value.
    Decomposition of the thiamine nitrate coated with fat was slow whereas that of the uncoated one was rapid.

    It is well known that yellowtail fed raw anchovy as the sole feedings stuff for long periods develop a disease characterized by high mortality and retarded growth. The disease is considered to be a thiamine deficiency caused by the thiaminase present in raw anchovy.
    The present study was undertaken to clarify the preventive effect of thiamine on the disease in yellowtail. Yellowtail with an average weight of 16 g were fed raw anchovy with or without added thiamine for 57 days. The thiamine used is coated with fat in order to prevent its decomposition by the thiaminase. The results obtained can be summarized as follows:
    1. The fish fed raw anchovy during the entire period showed growth retardation and high mortality. At the end of the experiment, the survival rate was 13.4% and the average weight, 34g.
    2. The fish receiving the thiamine supplement during the entire period showed good growth and low mortality. At the termination of the feeding trial, their average weight was 114 g and the survival rate, 95 %. The fish given mackerel, horse mackerel and sand launce which contain no thiaminase also showed good growth and low mortality.

    The chromophore of the three major components of skipjack green pigment was examined by the chromic acid and dichromate degradation method and proved to be biliverdin IXα. irrespective of the components. The contents of biliverdin were two moles per mole of components I and II and one mole per mole of component VI. The amino acid compositions of the peptide moieties of the three components were somewhat similar in that the contents of acidic amino acids and glycine were high while those of halfcystine and tyrosine were extremely low. The total amounts of amino acids in components I, II, and VI were found to be 31, 23, and 20%, respectively.

    The OGUR-ROSEN'S method for the determination of RNA and DNA in plants was so modified as to be applicable to the fractionation and determination of acid-soluble phosphates, phospholipids, RNA, DNA and phosphoprotein in marine algae. Major points of the modification are as follows: (1) the extraction of lipid fraction was preceded by that of the acid-soluble fraction, and (2) the E260 value of the PCA extract of RNA was followed up during the extraction until it reached a maximum level.
    The modified method was employed for the fractionation of RNA and DNA in six species of red algae, three species of grass-green algae and one species of brown algae. The extracted amounts of RNA and DNA were estimated by the absorbance at 260mμ.
    The RNA and DNA contents of the sample algae on dry basis were 5.3-18.4mg and 0.8-3.8mg per gram, respectively. The results with Porphyra were particularly interesting because of their showing the highest RNA contents among the sample algae.
    No significant differences in RNA and DNA contents were observed between the normal and tumorous fronds of Porphyra tenera, contrary to the report of higher DNA contents in tumorous lavers by KATAYAMA and FUJIYAMA (1957). The present study of the analytical procedure infers that the high value for DNA presumably resulted from an incomplete extraction of RNA.

    Differences in the seasonal variations of the lipid contents and the fatty acid compositions in the flesh of parr, residual type and seaward migration type of wild Masu salmon parr (Oncorhynchus masou) during fresh-water habitation were investigated.
    The lipid content decreased gradually from summer to winter in each type. In spring, the lipid content in the residual type increased rapidly, while that in the seaward migration type tended to decrease after a slight initial increase. In autumn, the lipid content in the residual type was less than that in the other two types.
    Palmitoleic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids decreased in winter, while eicosatetraenoic, eicosapentaenoic and decosahexaenoic acids increased. But these changes tended to vary with the type of fish.
    In spring, palmitoleic and oleic acids were less in the seaward migration type than in the residual type.
    It was considered that the decrease of the lipid content in each type from summer to winter was presumably due to diminution of the fish diets, and that the greater autumnal decrease in the residual type lipid content was related to maturation. It was also presumed that the spring decrease of both lipids and monoenoic acids in the seaward migration type was closely related to smolt-transformation.

    Differences in the lipid compositions and the fatty acid compositions of the residual type and seaward migration type of Masu salmon parr (Oncorhynchus masou) flesh lipids during the period of seaward migration were investigated.
    The results obtained are summarized as follows:
    1) The lipid content of the seaward migration type was less than one-half that of the residual type.
    2) Comparison of the residual type and seaward migration type lipid compositions indicated a lower content of triglycerides and higher contents of phospholipids and free sterols in the seaward migration type.
    3) The contents of each fatty acid were uniformly lower in the seaward migration type than in the residual type, the decrease in palmitoleic and oleic acids being more conspicuous in the seaward migration type.
    It was considered that the consumption of lipids (mainly triglycerides) as the energy source in the seaward migration type swelled during the period of seaward migration and that, among the fatty acids, the monoenoic acids might be chiefly consumed. Furthermore, the consumption of polyenoic acids as well as saturated and monoenoic acids might increase during the latter stage of smolt-transformation.

    The present histological investigation of fish meat products was undertaken in order to estimate the adhesion rate of casings to fish meat products. The protein network of fish meat products adhering to the casings in smaller than that of the central part of the product. If ordinary polyvinylidencholride casing is used, the surface of the fish meat product is smooth and the protein network is dense. The meat adhesion phenomenon of fish meat products containing 5% pork fats to their casings cannot be explained adequately by histological observations of sections dyed with Sudan III. While the size of granular wheat starch in the casing-adhering products is small, it increases with proximity to the central part of the product.

    Whale nasal cartilage was liquefied by Pronase digestion, and mucopolysaccharides were prepared by Dowex 50W-X 1 treatment and precipitation with six volumes of ethanol in the presence of 0.1M sodium acetate.
    The behaviors of chondroitin sulfate (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), and keratosulfate (KS) in the fractional precipitation of the mucopolysaccharides with ethanol and in the ion exchange chromatography of each fraction on Dowex 1 were examined, the following results being obtained.
    1) The mucopolysaccharides were fractionally precipitated at ethanol concentrations of 36, 39, 44, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 85% in the presence of 2M sodium acetate. Thus, Frs. 1-8 were obtained.
    2) Frs. 1 and 2 were composed of CS-A and a small amount of CS-C; Fr. 3, CS-A and small amounts of CS-C and HA; Frs. 4 and 5, CS-A and small amounts of CS-C, HA and KS; Fr. 6, KS and a small amount of CS-A; and Frs. 7 and 8, almost KS.
    3) A large portion of HA in Fr. 3 was separated from CS by the chromatography on Dowex 1. But only half of KS in Fr. 5 was separated from CS, and the separation of KS from CS in Fr. 6 was difficult.
