In order to elucidate the selection of spawning substrate by female cuttlefish Sepia esculenta, their behavior and trigger stimulus during a spawning sequence were examined in indoor tanks. Female approaches substrate, spurts water towards substrate, takes sediment in arms, covers eggs with sediment, spurts water towards substrate again, and undergoes egg deposition on substrate to complete one spawning. Females which finished copulation were visually attracted to more visible substrate. The height of a substrate was not an important factor for the attraction. Substrates which swung by the spurting water were not accepted by females. Females exhibited taking sediment even though there was no sediment on the tank bottom. It was concluded that female cuttlefish prefer long, fine, and immobile materials as spawning substrates.

Mean seasonal changes in water temperature, salinity, silicate, phosphate, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and dissolved oxygen (DO) in Okkirai Bay, Japan, were presented based on the monthly averaged data measured from 1979 to 1995. Recent trends of these properties were presented using 12-month running means. As a result, isopleths of mean seasonal changes showed a high nutrient concentration in winter and spring, and the vertical profile tended to be uniform. Recent trends showed great effects due to the Oyashio cold water that is rich in nutrients and DO, which came close to coastal waters in 1984, and that the water temperature has gradually increased since then, in line with decreasing nitrate, ammonium nitrogen, and DO.

Line source model of fishing lamps for under-surface illuminance around the Coastal squid jigging boat was calculated with a formula based on the line source model of fishing lamps, the spacial luminous distribution of HID lamp and the surface reflectance by Fresnel's law. Calculated patterns of illuminance around the boat showed a good fit to the observed patterns in the fishing ground for the boats equipped with the lamps of 30kW and 75kW. According to the model of lighting pattern, the rational spacing of neighboured boats was considered to have a formula of Y=95.2 (In A+In B)-87, when Y (m) is a interval distance, A and B (kW) are the total consumed electricity for fishing lamps of two boats, with a hypothesis of minimum under-surface illuminance for non-interference which not proceed the level of 0.01 lx.

Mixed groups of two different species of tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, O. niloticus, and their hybrids obtained from a river in Ibusuki city, Kagoshima pref. Japan were kept in two concrete tanks and evaluated for their vulnerability to angling. After capture-recapture angling tests, electrophoretic analysis was applied to all specimens to examine the effect of the degree of introgrssion of O. mossambicus and O. niloticus on the individual catchability. The most vulnerable group (three times hooked repeatedly) was composed mainly of O. niloticus and the least vulnerable one (three times unhooked repeatedly) was composed mainly of O. mossambicus. In the hybrids of these species, however, the most vulnerable specimens did not necessarily include more alleles orginally from O. niloticus than those from O. mossambicus, and there was no correlation between the degree of introgression and the catchability. This result implies that the individual catchability in hybrids is mostly determined by a posteriori rather than a priori.

The thinning and ear hanging work of scallop aquaculture can be regarded as a line production system.
Previous studies evaluated the optimization of an assembly line using the sum of labor and facility cost per day. This paper introduces a new evaluation measure to improve work system based on two points as follows; (1) To convert the operation efficiency to production cost; and (2) To transform the fixed cost of the facility to a total depreciation per planned production quantity.
The results of the calculation show that the new evaluation measure is the most suitable for the work, because the work system optimized by the new evaluation measure has a greatly higher efficiency and fewer facilities than that produced by the previous evaluation measure.

This paper presents the measuring weight error of fish body based on drainage time, mechanism of the weighing box, and the relationship between the error of the body width selected and counting error.
    1. When the drainage time of fish body discharged from the separating mechanism is 10s, the measuring weight error is small and constant.
    2. If the dividing clearance of the weighing box is wider than the body width and smaller than the body length, it prevents the fish from learing out of the weighing box.
    3. If the ratio of the largest body width to the smallest body width is small, the counting error is small.
    4. When the number oftish inside the weighing box is 20 fry and the velocity of the weighing conveyor is 0.2m/s, the counting capacity of the system is 144, 000 fry per hour.

Relationships between the occurrences of Gymnodinium mikimotoi red tide and the environmental factors in Tanabe Bay were studied on the basis of field observation during 1989-1994. G. mikimotoi red tide first appeared at the southern area and then spread over the whole bay. The southern area is topographically semi-closed and nutrient concentrations were higher than those in the other areas of this bay. It appears that these features of this area permit the high proliferation of the species. Nutrient concentrations of the southern area was kept at the levels which support the occurrences of G. mikimotoi red tide period. However, G. mikimotoi red tide was observed in 1990, 1991 and 1994. The rate of seawater exchange in these years was considered to be lower than that in the years when the red tide did not occur. It is highly considered that the occurrences of G. mikimotoi red tide in Tanabe bay depends on the rate of seawater exchange in the southern area.

This paper investgates the gathering behavior of fish to the FAD. Juveniles of Seriola quinqueradiata were observed. The experiment used an outdoor experimental tank and the FAD models to evaluate the gathering behavior and distribution during diurnal change.
The distribution pattern of juvenile Seriola quinqueradiata during diurnal change matched the change of light intensity. In the daytime, the fish gathered to the models but in the nighttime, didnot. The juveniles of Seriola quinqueradiata stayed beneath a model FAD at relative position for a long time. The ratio of the index of gathering density which reflects the gathering behavior depended on the shape of the model. The ratio was a high value in each experiment, and so the juveniles of Seriola quinqueradiata exhibited a strong gathering behavior.

The eggs of a Ginbuna Carassius langsdorfii (all female triploids) were inseminated by the sperms of a common carp Cyprinus carpio. A part of the eggs was treated by heat shock: 40°C for 1.0min at 5min after fertilization.
The average of erythrocytic major diameter of offsprings from non-treated eggs was 17.4μm (17.1-17.7μm). The patterns of glucosephosphate isomerase (GPI), RAPD-PCR (random primer: OPA-04, 09, 15), and DNA fingerprinting (restriction endonuclease: Hae III; probe: YNZ 22) in the offsprings were identical with maternal fish.
The average of erythrocytic major diameter of offsprings from treated eggs was 20.6μm (20.3-20.9μm). The patterns of GPI, RAPD-PCR, and DNA fingerprinting in the offsprings were composed of all bands of maternal fish and partial bands of paternal fish.
Therefore, the results obtained in this study suggest that the offsprings from non-treated eggs were triploid clones, and the offsprings from treated eggs might be tetraploid composed of genome from both parents.

A biplane-type otter board is composed of a pair of ordinary cambered otter boards with the same size and shape. To investigate and compare the hydrodynamic characteristics of a biplane and ordinary types, a series of experiments was carried out using 1:10 scale models in a circulating water tank, each having 260.4cm2 in area, with the camber of 15% of chord and aspect ratio of 3.0.
The lift and drag forces, and moment were measured with a three component balance at attack angles ranging from 0° to 70°. The maximum lift coefficient was 1.68 at the gap-chord ratio of 0.91 and attack angle of 20°. The effect of stagger angle on the maximum lift coefficient was extremely small. The maximum lift coefficient of a biplane type was nearly the same as that of ordinary cambered type. Also, the range of the attack angle for the biplane type was wider within the higher level of lift coefficient than that of an ordinary type. This suggests that the former is hydrodynamically more efficient than the latter.

Transmission ray of underwater noise emitted by drifting vessel have two direction i.e. direct and reflected rays. Interference occurs to receive the mixed sound wave from both rays at a hydrophone. The present research compares a theoretical interference with the basis of actual measurements of interference.
We observed vertically underwater noise emitted by drifting vessel with intervals one meter on 26m depth and 93m depth sea area. Also spectrogram by spectrum data was made in each depth. The results, at both stations the same striped patterns appeared on a range of about 13m and 16m from sea bottom, and on the frequency range of over 50Hz. By theoretical pattern, this spectrum level changed with their phase differences, and the interference relate to the depth of a hydrophone from the sea bottom rather than the depth of sea area. If the frequency increased, the term pattern decreases. That observed patterns coincided with a theoretical interference patterns by both waves at the frequency range of over 100Hz. A great term pattern appeared at the shallow sea area rather than the deep sea.

Volatile compounds collected by simultaneous distillation and extraction under reduced pressure from fresh and stored (10°C, 24h) sardine Sardinops melanosticta mince were analyzed by GC/MS. According to the lowering of freshness in sardine, a total of 39 carbonyls (carbon numbers 5-15, C5-15) and alcohols (C2-8) increased, especially 2, 4-heptadienal, 3, 5-octadiene-2-one, 2, 4-decadienal, and 2, 4, 7-decatrienal. The presence of fishy odor compounds (E, E, Z)-2, 4, 7-decatrienal and (E, E, Z)-2, 4, 7-tridecatrienal in the volatiles was established by synthesis of authentic compounds. This finding suggested that C7-13 carbonyls formed via autoxidation of PUFA, such as 2, 4-heptadienal, 3, 5-octadiene-2-one, 2, 4-decadienal, 2, 4, 7-decatrienal, and 2, 4, 7-tridecatrienal are the main contributors to the characteristic fishy off-flavor of sardine.

In order to investigate the difference in the protein network structure among suwari gel, kamaboko gel, and suwari-kamaboko gel, the effect of measuring temperature on their visco-elasticity was examined. These gels were prepared from the same surimi paste of horse mackerel Trachurus japonicus, by setting at 40°C for 1h, by heating at 80°C for 30min, and by heating at 80°C for 30min after setting at 40°C for 1h, respectively. With rising the measuring temperature from 5°C to 40°C, storage modulus and loss modulus obtained by dynamic test, elasticity modulus and viscosity obtained by stress-relaxation test, and compression stress before breakage in a puncture test decreased for all the gels but the breaking force and breaking deformation increased. Furthermore, master curves could be drawn from the time-stress curves recorded by the puncture test for these gels. Based on the above results, the network structure in these gels and its dispersion in them were discussed.

To decide the subfragment in carp myosin responsible for the polymerization of myosin heavy chain (HC) through SS bonding during the heating at 80°C, carp myosin was digested with α-chymotrypsin into S-1 and rod, and was heated. From the SDS-PAGE patterns (3% polyacrylamide gel) of the heated samples solubilized in 8M urea-2% SDS, two components were found to be produced. The one was observed on the top of the polyacrylamide gel, and the other was just over HC and was 260 kDa in molecular mass. By treating each component with 10% 2-mercaptoethanol, it was found that the former component was made only from S-1 (80 kDa) and the latter was only from rod (130 kDa).
Therefore, it was concluded that in the polymerization of HC through SS bonding during the heating of myosin, SH groups on rod is responsible for the formation of HC dimer and those on S-1 is responsible for the HC polymer formation.
