    Studies were conducted to clarify the temperature preference and tolerance, and the effects of temperature on the growth of young Schlegel's black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. A horizontal temperature gradient tank was used for the temperature preference test. The preferred temperature of the fish acclimated to 15-28°C ranged 17.8-22.8°C, with no clear dependence on the acclimation temperature. The final preferendum was estimated to be about 20.5°C. The upper and lower lethal temperatures of the fish exposed for 72h to eight or nine constant test temperatures ranged 28.1-30.5°C and 2.0-9.5°C, respectively. The critical thermal maximum and minimum ranged respectively 31.2-34.6°C and 1.3-4.9°C. The ultimate upper lethal temperature, which could not be exceeded with elevating acclimation temperature, was 30.8°C. In a rearing experiment, where the fish were fed Euphausia pacifica to satiation for 21 days at seven constant temperatures between 12 and 30°C, the highest daily feeding rate, daily growth rate and food conversion efficiency of the fish were found at 25°C, 22°C and 20°C, respectively.
    The final preferendum was thus found close to the temperatures for the highest growth rate and food conversion efficiency.

    The spawning season and area of Chilean jack mackerel, Trachurus murphyi, outside of 100mile zone of the Chile (south of 30°S) were estimated using the materials collected by mid-water trawl surveys conducted by the Japan Marine Fishery Resources Research Center during the period from 1983 to 1989. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The spawning season was estimated to be in austral summer (January-March). (2) The spawning took place over the oceanic waters off Chile. (3) Maturation size of the jack mackerel was estimated to be 24cm in male and 26cm in feamale in fork length.

    Since, in a set-net fishery in the sea off Kyoto Prefecture, small mesh sized net in bag-net (about 15mm in streched size) are commonly used, the juveniles of red sea bream Pagrus major (≤ 100mm in fork length) are caught and are mostly discarded at sea.
    This paper describes the mesh selectivity for the juveniles of red sea bream. Mesh selectivities were obtained from a series of net hauling experiments using six bag-nets (mesh sizes 13.6, 18.6, 22.5, 25.3, 27.7 and 30.2mm). The mesh selection curves were determined as a logistic function for various mesh sizes. The value of selection span (difference of fork length between 25% and 75% selection) were 7.3 ?? 8.5mm for less than 22.5mm mesh, 4.9 ?? 6.8mm for more than 25.3mm mesh, respectively. The resultant selection factors ranged from 2.32 to 2.93 for various mesh sizes.
    Through this experiments, it is implied that fish behaviour by their size may have a significant effect on the mesh selectivety.

    In order to identify the relationship between the hauling interval and the catch quality and quantity of the small scale set-net, experimental operations was conducted in the fishing grouns of Tateyama Bay, Chiba prefecture in August, 1995. The experimental protocol of the bag net hauling procedure was designed to vary in different hauling intervals as 3hours (8hauls/day), 6hours (4hauls/day), 12hours (2hauls/day), and 24hours (1haul/day). The total of 75hauls for 5 series at 4 different intervals were made, so that the weigth of catch was recorded for all species. The average catch per haul was tended to increase in case of total catch for all species comprehensively, while the cumlative catch per day eventually decreased according to the prolonged hauling intervals. These results suggested that the average catch per haul can not be expected to increase in proportion with the hauling interval, because some species once trapped in the beg net were not always being cumulated, and escaped due to the time delay of hauling procedure. Catch cumulating according to the time period to the following haul can be also influenced by the time of day in relation to the rhythmic activity of each species. The percentage of fish remaining on the bag net to the next hauling could be estimated as only 1.7-40.2% at 6hours of the haulig interval for round herring Etrumeus teres that was dominant species on the experiment.

    Two flathead species of the genus Platycephalus, P. sp. I (Japanese name: Magochi) and P. sp.II (Japanese name: Yoshinogochi), from the western Suonada and the southern Yatsushiro Seas, Japan, were compared morphologically and electrophoretically. Platycephalus sp. II was easily distinguished from P. sp. I by the presence of irregular brown spots on the back and sides. Complete species separations were also observed at the following meristic characters on fish scales: pored scales in lateral line (PSLL), 67-74 in sp. I, 86-99 in sp. II; transverse rows of scales running obliquely backward and downward (TRSB), 89-107 in sp. I, 108-121 in sp. II; and transverse rows of scales running obliquely forward and downward (TRSF), 124-138 in sp. I, 143-157 in sp. II. Relative growth of the following eight body parts to standard length was significantly different between the two species: predorsal length (PDL), preanal length (PAL), body width (BW), caudal peduncle depth (CPD), head length (HL), head width (HW), upper jaw length (UJL), and interorbital width (IOW). These two species did not share alleles at six loci out of 20 loci detected from isozymes and general proteins and gave a genetic distance of 0.380-0.405, a typical value of congeneric species.

    The present work was carried out on the catch yield fluctuation and population structure of the cockle fulvia mutica in Tokyo Bay. The fishing season of the cockle is from Apri1 to early August. Most of the catches are recorded in May and June. The CPUE is high in the beginning of the fishing season and shows a sharp decrease throughout the fishing season. It seems that the CPUE is a good index of the population size of Fulvia mutica.
    The catches are divided into six market size categories after landing. The two smallest market size categories account for most of the catches, and their percentages in the catch increase during the fishing season. However, shell lengths of the six market size categories are between about 43 to 70mm, and the difference in categories does not mean that in year class. More than 50 to 70 percent of the total catches are from 50 to 60mm in shell length, which corresponds to just one year in age. It is considered that the population of the cockle is dominated by one year class. Simplicity of age compositions in the population was supposed to be one of the important factors causing the drastic fluctuation in the catches in Tokyo Bay.

    Growth, maturation and spawning season of Fulvia mutica (Reeve) were examined using shell length frequency analysis, and seasonal changes in percentages occurrence of the mature individuals.
    Size-frequency analysis of shell length showed that the mode of 0-age group was less than 20mm in August, and grew over 60mm by next April. Thereafter, however, one year age group showed a very slow growth. It seems that most of the cockle can not survive till age two. The von Bertalanffy growth curve of the cockle was determined as SLt=96.42[1-exp{-0.0818(t-0.2007)}], where SLt is shell length in mm at age t in month.
    Both the condition factor and meat weight index were high in March and low after June. Percentage occurrence of mature individuals showed a peak from April to July, and decreased sharply afterward. The shell length of the mature individuals were ranged from 50mm to 55mm, which were supposed to be just one year in age. Analysis showed that spawning season of the cockle in Tokyo Bay lasted from April to July with the major spawning period of May and June.

    Muscle quality of plaice Paralichthys olivaceus fed with fresh food, dry pellet and moist pellet was evaluated with respect to proximate composition, fatty acids composition, lipid class and free amino acids composition, compared with wild plaice muscle.
    In the muscle of plaice fed with pellets monoenes ratio was high and in wild plaice muscle the ratios of polyenes and saturates were high in comparison with the plaice fed with fresh food.
    As for lipids class, cultured plaice contained triglyceride and phospholipid more than 90% and wild plaice contained 87% of phospholipid and mono-and diglyceride in total lipid. Taurine was contained in the highest amount in cultured and wild plaice muscle. In the muscle of plaice fed with fresh food lysine was high, and in the muscle of plaice fed with dry pellet, anserine was high, which resulted from the diet.

    From the point of view of high utilization of pearl oyster meat, shellfish protein hydrolysates (SPH) were prepared from pearl oyster meat and three other kinds of shellfish meat by enzymic treatment using proteases. SPH of pearl oyster meat was added to myofibrils from lizard fish and the changes in the state of water in myofibrils associated with dehydration were analyzed on the basis of the sorption isotherm curve and isosteric sorption heat. Involvement of these changes in the denaturation of myofibrils was investigated with respect to ATPase activity as an indicator and the results were compared with those for SPH of three other kinds of shellfishes.
    The addition of SPH resulted in a decrease in water activity, an increase in the amount of monolayer or multilayer sorbed water and an increase in the isosteric sorption heat, indicating the changes in the state of water in myofibrils. Furthermore, it was found that SPH has supressive effects on the denaturation of myofibrils resulting from dehydration and there is a correlation between the repressive effects and the state of water.
    These results suggest that the supressive effects on the denaturation are likely to be attributed to the stabilization of the hydrated water surrounding myofibrils by the adittion of SPH.

    From the point of view of high utilization of pearl oyster meat, shellfish protein hydrolysates (SPH) were prepared from pearl oyster meat and three other species of shellfish meat by enzymic treatment using proteases. SPH prepared from each meat was added to lizard fish myofibrils and the changes in the amount of unfrozen water in myofibrils associated with freezing were analyzed by a differential scanning calorimetry. ATPase activity was simultaneously measured.
    The amount of unfrozen water increased by the addition of each SPH. When SPH was not added to myofibrils, the amount of unfrozen water rapidly decreased during frozen storage, whereas the decrease was moderate in myofibrils with SPH. Meanwhile, the decrease in ATPase activity during frozen storage was a similar tendency to that of the amount of unfrozen water, indicating a close correlation between ATPase activity and the amount of unfrozen water. The present study suggests that the denaturation of myofibrils might be suppressed by the addition of SPH, since SPH constructed the water molecules resulting in an increase in the amount of unfrozen water.

    In order to consume fish oil much easier, rheological properties of mayonnaise-like emulsions made from EPA and DHA-rich fish oils have been compared with that made from vegetable salad oils. There were no differences in particle size distribution of oil droplets, viscosity and dynamic viscoelasticity between fish oil emulsions and mayonnaise. Under shear stress, fish oil emulsions show high thixotropy, and particle size of fish oil emulsions increases. It must be emphasized that fish oil emulsions must carefully be handled and transported after their preparation, accordingly.

    Specimens of horse mackerel were killed by stabbing in the spinal bulb or neck-breaking. After death, the fishes were stored at 0°C. The rate of progress of rigor-mortis, and the rate of change of concentrations of energy-related compounds and breaking strength of the dorsal muscle were investigated. The rate of progress of rigor-mortis in the neck-breaking group was slower than that in the stabbing in the spinal bulb group. The concentrations of ATP and creatine phosphate in the dorsal muscle immediately after killing in the neck-breaking group were higher than those in the stabbing in the spinal bulb group. Conversely, the initial values of concentrations of IMP and lactic acid were lower in the neck-breaking group. No significant differences were observed in the changing rates of breaking strength of the muscle and K-value. From these results, it was considered that the killing procedure by neck-breaking was able to delay the changes in rates of rigor-mortis and energy-related compounds in muscle compared with the treatment by stabbing in the spinal bulb.
