The fats obtained by boiling from the orbit, the head and the whole trunk muscle of red salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka (WALB.), and pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (WALB.), caught at south Kishika of Kamchatka, and from the muscle and the viscera of domestic carp, Cyprinus carpio (LINN), were examined. The results as given in Table 1 for salmon oils and in Table 2 for carp oils show that there are few differences among the various bodily parts in this respect. The fatty acids separated by TWITCHELL method from visceral oil of carp have higher iodine value and are richer in liquid constituents than those from muscular oil (Tables 3 to 5).

The content of agar-agar in Gelidium and some other sea-weeds was found to amount to 40% on the average, a little higher in spring but lower in summer. Grading of the sea-weeds on the market has no connection with the content of the substance whatever.

The spawning season of the Japanese sardine is considered to be mainly from February to April, judging from the changes in the rate of group maturity and also from the growth of larval sardine. The spawning ground lies not only off the west coast of Kyfûsyû, but also along the Pacific coast south of Sagami Bay and also the southern Japan Sea coast.

The present account deals with the results of direct observations on the whales brought into the floating factory “Kyokuyô-maru” during the Antarctic season 1938/1939 in the whaling ground (so-called Area IV). During the period extending from 16th November 1938 to 15th March 1939, a total of 472 blue whales was examined.
    1) The average number of corpora lutea of 113 mature female whales (the average length of which measured 24.98m.) was 7.69 (Tab. 7). It was seen from this that female blue whales averaged the same age during the 1926/27 season at South Georgia and during the 1938/39 season in the Antarctic Area IV.
    2) The whales with only one corpus luteum were conspicuously dominant in number (Fig. 4). Of 16 such whales 8 were pregnant and 2 were lactating. Thus at least 10 (63 %) whales would be estimated as they were pregnant in the first breeding season and nearly the same results as mentioned above were obtained also in the whales with two or three corporalutea. Furthermore, as suggested by WHEELER (1930), since whales act collectively the number of unfertilized ovulations before pregnancy tends to be the same in any one season, and each peak of the frequency graph may be considered as representing an age group. From these facts, it might be tentatively concluded that the number of unfertilized ovulations before pregnancy, if any, must be far less in number than the figures (4-5) suggested by MACKINTOSH and WHEELER.
    3) The proportion of mature to immature whales by the length of the whale was 56% to 44% respectively. These figures were nearly alike to those at South Georgia given by M. and W. during the season 1925/26-1926/27.
    4) The apparent constitution of the stock i.e, the ratios of the different classes of whales examined might be summarized and compared with the results given by M. and W. at South Georgia as in the table on the preceding page.
    5) Assuming that the onset of physical maturity in females coincides with the accumulation of eleven corpora lutea as was suggested by LAURIE (1937), the proportion of the physically mature females was found to be 30% of the sexually mature females and 14% of the total females.

In order to know the influence of the density of fish-eggs on their hatching, experiments were carried out with the case where the medium water was replaced by the amount, inversely proportional to the density of eggs. The results may be summarized as follows: -
    (1) Generally speaking, the influence of density of eggs is not remarkable upon the percentage of successful hatching, whereas (2) the time required to complete the hatching shows a tendency to be prolonged as the density of eggs is increased.

It is notable enough that Dr. BOERGESEN(2) treated of 5 species of deep sea algae collected at the depth of about 200 meters near Canary Is., almost at the same time as our previous report(1) was issued. In his paper, we found very interesting fact that 3 genera and 1 species, Callymenia reniformis) coincide with those from our deep seas. Hereupon, we continued the further research of the growing-zone of marine algae on the western coast of Izu district, having depths of from 20 to 210 meters. In our present research, however, we could not find any algae from the bottom deeper than 80 meters and only 21 species were collected from the depth of 20-60 meters.
