Seasonal variations in species composition, abundance, biomass, specific growth rate and production rate of tintinnid ciliates were investigated in Kure Port, the Inland Sea of Japan. Twenty species representing 8 genera occurred on a pronounced seasonal basis. Tintinnid abundance varied from 0 to 620 cells L^-1 with an annual mean of 150 cells L^-1, which appeared to be much lower than those commonly encountered in coastal waters where chlorophyll-a levels were similar to those in Kure Port. The natural tintinnid populations were incubated under predator-free in situ conditions on each sampling occasion, and specific growth rates were determined for 18 species. The growth rates ranged from 0.10 to 1.18d^-1, which is about half of the near-potential growth rates predicted from empirically derived multiple regressions based on temperature and cell size. These in situ growth rates were used to estimate the production rate of the tintinnid community, which varied from 0 to 5.2μg CL^-1d^-1. The calculated daily grazing impact of tintinnids on nanophytoplankton biomass was as low as 0 to 8.8%. The low abundance and growth rate of tintinnids in Kure Port might be responsible to the occurrence of phytoplankton species with poor food quality.

Experiments on the extraction reaction between Cu (II) and a microcapsule containing 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (MC-EHPNA) were carried out in batches. The effects of stirring speed, hydrogen ion concentration, metal concentration and temperature on the initial extraction rate were examined experimentally. The effects of concentrations of hydrogen and copper-ion on the initial extraction rate showed a similar tendency to those of a solvent extraction system. From these experimental results, both diffusion and chemical reaction are expected to contribute to the rate-determining step. It is necessary to evaluate the metal extraction behavior with the microcapsules by means of the diffusion model with interfacial reaction.

The sterile mutant Ulva, a green alga, has the potential to grow stably, and is expected to be an efficient resource of functional food containing various nutrients such as proteins and sulfur amino acids. Ulva lactuca was isolated from the Tokyo Bay, and its growth rate (g-dry/ (m²·d)) was evaluated using a model reactor at the surface of the sea at Yokohama. In these experiments, the growth rate of Ulva lactuca was found to be approximately 20 g-dry/ (m²·d), which is estimated to be 10 times greater than the rice yield in paddy fields. Based on these data, we designed a new float production system. D-cysteinolic acid, which was contained in Ulva lactuca as a major sulfur amino acid, demonstrated both reactive oxygen suppression and triglyceride reduction. Methanol-extracts of the Ulva lactuca also showed a strong antiviral property toward salmon pathogenic viruses, infectious haematopoietic necrosis viruses (IHNV) by in vitro plaque reduction. Therefore, facilities using eutrophied seawater can potentially produce a valuable resource.

The effect of shrimp pond effluent discharges on the mangrove forest in Khung Krabaen Bay (KKB), eastern Thailand, was assessed by comparing the nitrogen content (%N) and stable nitrogen isotope (δ¹⁵N) of mangrove leaves and sediments with those in a natural mangrove forest in Ranong, southern Thailand. At the KKB site, the mean %N and mean δ¹⁵N value of mangrove leaves were 1.73±0.16% and 5.19±0.77‰, respectively, while in the mangrove sediment, %N was 0.20±0.02% and 5.21±0.88‰ for δ¹⁵N. At the Ranong site, the mean %N and mean δ¹⁵N values of mangrove leaves were 1.18±0.18% and 3.71±0.43‰, respectively, while in the mangrove sediment, values were 0.12±0.02% and 3.74±0.27‰, respectively. The %N and δ¹⁵N values of both leaves and sediments at the KKB site were significantly higher than those at the Ranong site (P < 0.01). The mean %N and mean δ¹⁵N values of shrimp feeds were 6.72±0.19% and 7.37±0.90‰, respectively. The mean δ¹⁵N of shrimp feeds was significantly higher than those of mangrove leaves and sediments (P < 0.01). Thus, high %N and δ¹⁵N in mangrove leaves and sediments at the KKB site were most probably due to the assimilation of ¹⁵N-enriched dissolved inorganic nitrogen from shrimp pond effluent. These results showed that mangrove forests are effective areas for trapping inorganic nitrogen from anthropogenic nitrogen inputs.
