To improve the resistance to oxidation of MgO-C brick bonded by phenolic resin, silicone resin was tried to use as a binder. Oxidation of MgO-C samples, consisting of magnesia, graphite and binder, was tested at 600-1400℃ and oxidation mechanism was studied. When using phenolic resin, the selective oxidation of phenolic resin went on the inside of the sample with a slight oxidation of graphite at 600℃. Accordingly, even though the graphite almost remained in the oxidized sample, the structure became brittle loosing the bond.At 800℃,the reaction surface of graphite was initially increased by the selective oxidation of phenolic resin. Therefore, the oxidation at 800℃ was larger than that at 1000℃.
When using silicone resin, the oxidation was almost protected at 600℃. The selective oxidation was not found especially at 800℃,so that the oxidation of MgO-C sample was less than that using phenolic resin. The Mixed resin which consists of phenolic resin and silicone resin in the ratio of 1:1 is effective for oxidation at low temperature.
