Authors have developed a spherical shaped container having the internal wall constructed with ceramic hollow units for transferring molten aluminum. This newly designed container was expected to provide light weight and high heat retaining properties, compared with current cylindrical containers having the internal wall made of
castable refractories. On the other hand, it was an important problem to suppress heat transmission caused by
radiation and convection inside the unit. In this report, applying ceramic fiber as light insulating materials or metal foil as low emissivity materials inside the unit, that heat transmission was suppressed. Furthermore, the design of the external surface and the pathway of heat transmission of the unit were also discussed. The evaluation of over-all heat transfer coefficient of the units revealed the structure which made it possible to combine high heat insulating properties and light weight of the unit.
