In this study, aluminum, silicon, and graphite powders with different particle sizes, as starting materials, were ground by vibration milling (VBM) and planetary micromilling (PMM) processes. The mechanochemical effect on Al4SiC4 production was verified by comparing raw materials with different particle sizes. The powder prepared by PMM had a smaller particle size and finer crystallites than the powder prepared by VBM. Furthermore, the powder obtained by PMM was confirmed to start forming Al4SiC4 on heating above 1200 ℃, demonstrating the possibility of low-temperature synthesis of Al4SiC4.
