    It is attempted to produce carbon solids from coke powder covered with mesophase without binder pitch. The coke powders used were a calcined coke and a green coke (not calcined), and the pitches were a coal-tar pitch and the petroleum heavy oils. A mixture of coke powder of 5 or 10 wt% and pitch was heat-treated at 430°C for a certain period. The mesophase in the heat-treated pitch exists on the surface of the coke powder and this coke covered with the mesophase was separated from the heat-treated pitch by quinoline treatment as quinoline insoluble part. Carbon solids were prepared by carbonization of the molding made of quinoline insoluble part (QI) and measured these physical properties.
    The obtained results are as follows;
    1) Compressive strength of the carbon solids increased with increasing the mesophase content in QI. When the mesophase content in QI was 50 wt%, the compressive strength was 600-1300 kg/cm2 at HTT 1000°C and 300-500 kg/cm2 at 2800°C.
    2) The carbon solids made of the green coke covered with the mesophase from coal-tar pitch had the highest strength and bulk density. Also, high strength carbon solids could be obtained from the coke much covered with the mesophase from petroleum heavy oils.
    3) The values of the electric resistance and the coefficient of thermal expansion were comparable to those of carbon solids prepared from coke and binder pitch, and were varied with the mesophase content in QI.
    From these results, it is confirmed that high strength carbon solids are prepared from the coke powder covered with mesophase.

    The changes of X-ray parameters, c0, Lc (00l), La (110), and Lc (112), with heat-treatment temperature (HHT) were investigated on three types of meso-carbon microbeads (MC) and also on the cokes obtained from each raw pitches by carbonization at 430°C for 40hr. The values of c0 and La (110) for the MC were similar to those for the cokes above 1600°C. The (112) diffraction profile of the MC appeared above 2200°C (c0=6.85Å). This temperature was higher than that for the cokes, but the MC and the cokes showed similar relation between c0 and Lc (112). On the relation between c0 and Lc (112) On the relation between c0 and lattice strain (εc) which was calculated from the slope of the plot of 1/Lc (00l) vs. l, εc of three types of MC was 0.015 when c0 was about 6.75Å, being larger than that of the cokes. The differences of X-ray parameters between the MC and the cokes were explained from the shape of the sphere which was preserved during heat treatment of MC.

    The influence of carbon felt on the mesophas formation in a petroleum pitch was investigated at 400°C for various residence times by the observation under polarized light microscope, and by the measurements of weight loss and amount of volatile matter in the pitch. Carbon felt used had been heat-treated at 2000°C.
    The mesophase formation in the pitch matrix was remarkably delayed by the existence of carbon felt except the preferential formation of mesophase at the periphery of fibers (about 10 μm thick). The mesophase spherules thus formed showed no obvious coalescence. After 12 hours at 400°C, the pitch was carbonized in a globular type texture in the existence of felt, while the pitch heat treated alone gave a coarse fibrous texture. This suggests that the felt acts to prevent the convection of fluid matrix, resulting to retard a gas bubble formation. The difference in microstructure was also detected by optical microscope, that is, mosaic type texture for the mixture of pitch coke and felt, and needle like texture for pitch coke itself. No difference in graphitization behavior was detected by X-ray diffraction measurements between the mixtures and the pitch cokes.
