    Surface modification of PAN based carbon fiber (CF) was carried out by plasma treatment to obtain high compatibility between CF and matrix in CF paper/cement composites (CFRC). The plasma was generated by radio frequency discharge (13.56MHz) with O2 gas, CF4 gas, and the mixture of two gas.
    Wettability of CF surface to water was remarkably modified to be hydrophilic for flow ratio of 1.0 (O2 gas only) and 0.75 (O2/CF4=37.5sccm/12.5sccm) of mixed gas, and to be hydrophobic for flow ratio of 0 (CF4 gas only) and 0.25 (O2/CF4=12.5sccm/37.5sccm), while little modification was observed for flow ratio of 0.5 (O2/CF4=25sccm/25sccm).
    CF papers thus treated were used for the preparation of CFRC. CFRC plates (6mm thick) were prepared by laminating 11 sheets of CF paper preimpregnated with portland cement paste (water/cement 0.4), and curing it in water. These CFRC's bulk density showed the values of 1.39g/cm3 and CF content was 2.7vol%.
    The flexural strength and Young's modulus of CFRC plates could be controlled by regulating plasma treatment condition (discharge power, kind of gas, flow ratio of mixed gas). The flexural strength of CFRC plate prepared from plasma-treated CF with power of 50W and flow ratio of 0.75 (O2/CF4=37.5sccm/12.5sccm), was about 1.5 times (45MPa) that of CFRC plate prepared from non-plasma treated CF. CFRC plate prepared from CF paper pretreated with power of 150W and flow ratio of 0.75, has a flexural strength 2/3 times (18MPa) that of CFRC from plasma-untreated CF.
    These experimental results showed that flexural strength of CFRC plate prepared from plasma treated CF paper is affected by kind of gas, flow ratio of mixed gas, and discharge power of plasma.

    A method in determination of the mesophase contents of pitches are presented. The method is based on the reflectivity difference between a mesophase part and an isotropic part. In order to get clear contrast between a mesophase part and an isotropic part, image processing is used. The method achieved accurate determination of the mesophase content from 0% to 100% in several minuets.

    A dynamic ultra-microhardness test, bending tests and Young's modulus measurements were performed on three grades of C/C composite and twelve grades of nuclear graphite. In hardness tests the indented load (L) versus depth (h) curves were obtained on loading and unloading processes. The parameters B and D were obtained by using L/h versus h relationships on loading and unloding processes, respectively. The correlations of the mean value of B with the bending strength and of the mean value of D with the Young's modulus were examined. As a result, no clear proportional correlations were found between the B and D values and the bending strength and Young's modulus of all of the tested carbon materials, respectively. However, correlations were found between bending strength and mean value of B on most of the graphite materials and between Young's modulus and mean value of D on fiber axis direction of a C/C composite. With the correlations the strength and Young's modulus of fine structures of the C/C composite have been attempted to evaluate.

    The pore-structure and adsorption property of charcoals were investigated to use them as the adsorbent. For the purpose adsorption isotherms and adsorption rate of nitrogen inthe gas phase and iodine in the liquid phase were measured and the following rusults were obtained.
    (1) The adsorption rate onto charcoal of nitrogen in gas phase and the adsorption rate of iodine in liquid phase were very low than those for activated carbon. In particular, that for Kashi oak carbonized at high temperature was very slow and those for Itayakaede maple, Mitsumata, Sugi cedar, and Japanese cypress were relatively high.
    (2) The specific surface areas of most charcoals were 300-400 m2/g. The surface area of Kashioak carbonized at high temperature was low and those of charcoals from needle-leaf tree such as Japanese cypress and cedar were high.
    (3) The micropore volumes were 0.1-0.2 mL/g.
    (4) The pore-size distribution of charcoal was similar to that of activated carbonand the mean pore diameters were 1.7-1.9 nm.

    To prepare diphenylborosiloxane (PBS) from diphenylsilanediol and boric acid in two ways, their mole ratio (Si/B) was set at 3/1 and 3/2. Infrared absorption spectrascopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and determination of average molecular weight by GPC were performed on the PBS obtained. Molecular weight and Si content of the synthesized PBS differed with the mole ratios of materials. For the ratio of Si/B=3/1, molecular weight was 513 and Si content was 10.5wt%, while that was 610 and 8.7wt% for the ratio of Si/B=3/2. Weight loss when heated at 1000°C in the air was 59% and 70% respectively.
    CF/ceramic composites were prepared from PBS (Si/B=3/2) and CF, where the relation between their preparation conditions and mechanical strength was studied. Composite with the highest strength had the bulk density of 1.46g/cm3, the bending strength of 250MPa, and the Young's modulus of 24GPa. Microscopic observation of their sections by SEM indicated that increase of boron caused the formation of viscous vitreous matrix, which closely adhered to CF. X-ray diffractometry gave a diffraction pattern for B2O3 as well as those for carbon and SiC.

    Graphite intercalation compounds with FeCl3, NiCl2, CuCl2 and EuCl3 were immersed in lithium-naphthalene-THF mixture. All of the metal chlorides, except EuCl3, were reduced in the interlayer spacing of graphite, and fine particles of corresponding metal and lithium chloride were obtained. As the particles are protected in the graphite matrix, they are inert even in acid solution.
    The size of Fe, Ni, Cu and LiCl particles, obtained in the graphite matrix, were estimated from the line width of X-ray diffraction profiles. The size increases in the order Ni<Fe<Cu<LiCl, which is explained based on the mobility difference of the precursors of fine particles.

    A brief review is presented of recent studies of the properties of the new substances, so-called fullerrenes. The thermophysical properties are compared with those of the other allotropic forms of carbon, diamond and graphite. Thermodynamic stability of C60 is estimated on the basis of the experimental data of heat of combustion. Molecular motion and phase transition phenomena in solid C60 are discussed in detail.
