Activated adsorption of cyclohexane (C6H12) was discussed over the activated carbon fibers (ACF) prepared from phenolic resin fabric. Three ACF samples used were different only of their activation levels. Benzene and chloroform vapors were adsorbed over all the ACF samples. However adsorptions of C6H12 and CCl4 over the poorly activated ACF were slightly limited by molecular effect. Rates of adsorption with molecular sieving effect was found to be composed of two steps; a fast-adsorption (FA) at initital stage followed by a slow-adsorption (SA). The latter process was an activated adsorption, and the desorption was not easy even at the boiling temperature of the adsorbate.

The changes in the resistivity of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-and pitch-based carbon fibers during isothermal hear-treatment by direct currenting were studied in the temperature range from 1200 to 2000 °C. By applying temperature-time superposition, smooth composite curves were obtained from the resistivity versus time curves at various temperatures. From these composite curves, the changes in the resistivity when the temperature was increased at a constant rate were calculated. The results of calculation approximated well the changes in the resistivity with temperature experimentally measured. Apparent activation energies of about 908 and 838 kJ/mol were calculated respectively for PAN-and pitch-based carbon fibers from the relation between the shift factor used for the temperature-time superposition and the surface temperature of tow. The influence of temperature distribution in tow cross-section on apparent activation energy is considered to be small. The variation of resistivity with time at a constant heat-treatment temperature was assumed as a superposition of first-order rate processes, and a rate constant spectrum was calculated.

The isotropic pitches as the materials for carbon fibers were prepared from various tars. The quality of the material pitches was evaluated by observing fiber continuity, infusibility in the processing and strength of the product fibers. The pitches were also characterized by means of elemental analysis, solvent fractionation analysis, NMR and ESR spectroscopies. It was confirmed that pitches with higher spin concentrations, larger aliphatic carbon amounts and higher mobilities show higher qualities. The desirable condition of the air-blowing reaction was found to be at lower temperature and pressure.

High silica glasses were filled in pores of carbon material, AGEN, to improve the oxidation resistivity above 1500°C. An impregnated borosilicate glass were (SiO2 content: 62.5wt%) phaseseparated into SiO2 and the residue which was removed by 1N H2SO4. Thus the porous silica glass in which the SiO2 content was 95.9wt% was densified by sintering at 1350°C under a N2 atmosphere. A part of 49.1% was filled by SiO2 out of the total pore volume of AGEN. One order of magnitude in oxidation rate compared to that of non-treated AGEN was decreased at the specific temperature ranges of 900-1200°C for the borosilicate glass impregnated AGEN and 1450-1600°C for the high silica glass filled AGEN. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient were independent of impregnation or the other treatment. Mechanical strength at room temperature was improved by 2.6 and 1.8 times for the borosilicate glass impregnated AGEN and high silica glass filled AGEN, respectively.

Influence of surface chemical properties on adsorption of organic compounds on activated carbons in the aqueous solution was investigated. In order to detect the large influence, activated carbons with large different chemical properties and with little change in pore-size distribution were prepared by oxidation treatment with nitric acid or by reduction treatment with hydrogen. The adsorption behaviors of nonionic, anionic, and cationic compounds on these surface-modified activated carbons were examined and the following results were obtained.
    (1) The adsorbability of nonionic and anionic compounds decreased with an increase in surface acidity of the activated carbons.
    (2) The adsorbability of cationic compound decreased in the low acidity range but the adsorbability increased in the high acidity range.
    (3) The influence of surface acidity on adsorption increased with an increase in the solution pH.
    (4) The hydration water around the surface acidic groups disturbs a hydrophobicmolecule contact the hydrophobic surface of activated carbon, consequently decreases the adsorption.
    (5) The acidic groups on activated carbon surface dissociate into anions in high pH, the surface anion groups depress the adsorption of anionic compounds by electrostatic repulsions and promote the adsorption of cationic compounds by electrostatic attractions.
