    The 13C-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) analyses were applied to four kinds of coal-tar pitches as raw material, and to the fractions of toluene insolublequinoline soluble (β-resin) and quinoline insoluble (QI) which were components of meso-carbon microbeads (MCMB) prepared from the heat-treatment of raw materials.
    It should be noted that QI had higher average molecular weight and more developed aromatic ring structure than β-resin, while QI and β-resin had almost the same aromaticity. Therefore, it was plausible that the change from raw material to β-resin was mainly caused by the increase of aromaticity, while the change from β-resin to QI was mainly caused by the development of aromatic ring structure. Furthermore, the content of bridged carbon locating between two aromatic rings was markedly reduced by the heat-treatment. It was found out that the yield and development of aromatic ring structure of MCMB were positively correlated with the average molecular weight and the content of bridged carbon of raw material as well.

    Activated carbon fiber (ACF) is used as an adsorbent for water purification, and the application field and the amount will be expanded by improving the property. So, we tried to make the surface of ACF hydrophobic by heat-treating in hydrogen flow (H2) up to 1000°C and by treating with low temperature plasma of carbon tetra fluoride (CF4). And from the view point of keeping good handling quality of ACF, the change of its mechanical properties, due to surface treatment, such as tensile strength, was investigated in this paper.
    Followings are the results: (1) By heat treatment in H2 flow, weight of ACF decreased, while there were both cases where the diameter decreased and where the diameter did not change. It depended on the kind of ACF.(2) Tensile strength of heat-treated ACF became higher and had maximum point between 500 and 750°C of heat treatment temperature. The temperature for the peak point depended on the kind of original fibers.(3) By the heat treatment at 900°C in H2 flow, decrease in containing oxygen groups on the surface was confirmed from the ESCA results. It was also confirmed from the measurement of equilibrium adsorbed water that the surface of ACF was made hydrophobic.(4) By CF4 plasma treatment, the mechanical properties and the equilibrium adsorbed water of ACF were not changed substantially.

    SiO2 was separated from an impregnated borosilicate glass on the inner wall of open pores in a brand of carbon material, AGEN. Crystalline silicon carbide was formed by a reaction of this SiO2 and wall carbon at 1900°C under a N2 atmosphere. No weight loss in the obtained AGEN was observed in air at every temperatures between 400 and 1550°C. Little weight loss was also observed even in heating at 1600 and 1650°C.
    Mechanical strength at room temperature was improved about 1.6 times compared with that of AGEN, but electrical conductivity was kept invariably after SiC formation.

    Temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivities (ρa) of several graphite specimens has been investigated between 4.2 K and 300 K. In the case of specimens less perfect than sigle crystal, gradient of the dependence curve becomes more gentle above 100 K, indicating that Matthiessen's rule is invalid. In order to explain the observations, an expression for ρa (T) including the relaxation time of defect scattering on the basis of Sugihara-Ono's formula is introduced; thereby experimental data have been satisfactorily reproduced.

    Intercalation of potassium and bromine into furnace blacks with different heat-treatmenttemperatures (HTTs) has been investigated. Potassium can be intercalated into carbon blacks irrespective of their HTTs; the saturated compound has the stage 1 structure. The observed isotherms for carbon black-bromine system show that the amount of bromine fixed by carbon black is less than 10% of that by graphite. The electrical resistance of residue compounds is larger than that of pristine materials for HTT≤1500°C but smaller for HT≥2000°C Such behavior is discussed in connection with the structure of host carbon blacks.

    Magnetoresistance of graphite materials measured at liquid nitrogen temperature is known to give information on graphitization degree and preferred orientation of the hexagonal carbon layers. This paper concerns magnetoresistance and orientation function for graphite material with axial orientation. We derived a mathematical relation between magnetoresistance and orientation function at first, assuming an orientation function for axial orientation to be propotional to the nth power of sine of the angle referred to an axis normal to the axial axis. Then, we defined three principal axes for the magnetoresistance, and related the components along these axes to the value of n. We obtained indirectly the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the orientation function through magnetoresistance data. Comparison of the value of FWHM obtained indirectly with that measured directly by X-ray diffraction is important. For this purpose, we chose mechanical pencil lead as the sample for investigation, because it is known as one of the representative materials with axial orientation. We carried out measurements of magnetoresistance at liquid nitrogen temperature and orientation function by X-ray diffraction for the samples. The results obtained were very satisfactory.

    A new surface modification method using a photosensitizer of carbon fiber (CF) has been investigated. This method consists of treating carbon fiber merely by photosensitizer dipping, rinsing and drying. An easier handling and a better energy-saving as compared with conventional surface modifying methods are the features of the new method. The modifying effect was examined for wettability and dispersibility, through microscopic observation and surface analysis.
    The results are as follows:
    1) Wettability of CF for water is improved by a mere photosensitizer painting. This effect is not degraded by washing/rinsing.
    2) Increase of O/C ratio and introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups on CF surface by the treatment are confirmed.
    3) Dispersion of modified CF into resin is improved remarkably.
    4) Mechanism of surface modification of CF by photosensitizer is considered attributable to reaction of photosensitized oxygenation.

    The application of vapor-grown carbon fibers (VGCFs) to cement sheets formed by a filtered suction press method was examined. The VGCFs used were prepared in a mixture of benzene and Linz-Donawitz converter gas by the floating catalyst method. The present VGCFs, as well as asbestos, were found to capture cement particles enough to form the cement sheet. The addition of the present VGCFs could not only reinforce the cement sheet but also make it conductive. The cement sheet containing the VGCFs of 10vol% showed the effect of electromagnetic interference shield, which was comparable to that of the commercial polymer sheet containing stainless steel fibers.
