    It was reported that a photovoltaic cell with carbonaceous film/n-type silicon (C/n-Si) was fabricated utilizing a process in which a carbonaceous film was deposited on an n-type silicon substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of 2, 5- dimethyl-p-benzoquinone at 500°C The purpose of this work is to study preparation and structure of the carbonaceous film. In this study, the carbonaceous films were made by CVD of 2, 5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone on a quartz substrate at a temperature between 500 and 1000°C. The 2, 5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone shows higher reaction activity for carbonization at low temperatures. At low CVD temperatures below 700°C, the carbonization reaction of 2, 5- dimethyl-p-benzoquinone was mainly caused by pyrolysis of its methyl and carbonyl groups. The carbonaceous film deposited at low temperatures below 700°C has a typical amorphous structure, and the one deposited above 700°C has a graphite-like lamellar structure oriented along the substrate.

    Evaluation of Surface Fractal Dimension of Carbon for Plasma-facing Material Damaged by Hydrogen Plasma Nobuhiro Nishino The surface structure of the plasma facing materials (PFM) changes due to plasma-surface interaction in a nuclear fusion reactor. Usually B4C coated graphite block are used as PFM. In this report, the surface fractal was applied to study the surface structure of plasma-damaged PFM carbon. A convenient flow-type adsorption apparatus was developed to evaluate the surface fractal dimension of materials. Four branched alkanol molecules with different apparent areas were used as the probe adsorbates. The samples used here were B4C coated isotopic graphite which were subjected to hydrogen plasma for various periods of exposure. The monolayer capacities of these samples for alkanols were determined by applying BET theory. The surface fractal dimension was calculated using the monolayer capacities and molecular areas for probe molecules and was found to increase from 2 to 3 with the plasma exposure time.

    Carbon industry in Taiwan is quite young. Most of all the carbon products have been imported from Japan into Taiwan. Carbon-related research in Taiwan is currently carried out by Chang-Shan Insititute of Science and Technology, some universities and industries. The major goal in carbon research of Chang-Shan Institute of Science and Technology is to develop high performance materials for military and commercial applications. Basic research on carbon materials in universities is concentrated on carbon/carbon composite, activated carbon fibers, active carbon, and carbon fibers. Industrial activity is primarily in the area of carbon-chemistry products, carbon fibers, active carbon and active carbon fibrics.

    Many carbon-related projects are currently being undertaken in Australia. Studies include such varied work as, for example, on anodes and other carbons used in the metallurgical industry, blast furnace cokes, mesophase and mesophase-related carbons, carbon fibres and composites, diamonds, fullerenes and associated carbons, and coalderived products such as soil ameliorants. Some examples of such work are described briefly below.

    A study of diamond films for electronic device application is reviewed based on our resent experimental results on homoepitaxil diamond films. High quality homoepitaxial diamond films have been successfully grown on (001) diamond substrate by introducing a concept of “clean epitaxiy”. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images have indicated that the surface of these films has atomically flat region and the films were grown by a step-flow mode. Current-voltage characteristics of Al/diamond Schottky diodes prepared with these films show excellent rectification properties with the very low level of the reverse current which has never been reported. Cathodoluminescence (CL) experiments at room temperature on these films also show a clear spectrum due to a free exciton for first time. These experimental results suggest that the diamond films grown by the step-flow mode have a potential for electronic device application.

    To date, graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) have been investigated extensively from a wide variety of viewpoints. In this paper, the studies on the reactions of metal chlorides in the interlayer of graphite are reviewed. When a metal chloride-GIC is reduced, atoms of zero-valent metal are generated in the interlayer. Some papers reported the resulting production of metal-GIC and other papers presented the formation of metallic particles in the graphite matrix. Other kinds of reactions such as replacement reaction and addition reaction observed in the interlayer of graphite are also discussed.
