    We report on the pyrolysis mechanism of aromatic polyimide (PMDA-ODA) and the obtained carbon precursor structure,and discuss the effect of the structure on the graphitization reaction. The reaction for the generation of the carbon precursorand its structure were examined, in consideration of the molecular orientation in the PMDA-ODA film, the detailed sizechange, weight loss, total carbon yield, and analysis of evolved gas during the pyrolysis reaction. The pyrolysis starts with theevolution of CO and CO2 gas by partial polyimide ring opening, and the reaction intermediates unite mutually before thepolymer chain completely disintegrates. The reaction uniting the polymer chains at the initial stage of the pyrolysis reactioncan explain why the molecular orientation of the polymer is maintained in the carbon precursor. The orientation in the carbonprecursor is partly retained in the carbonization process, resulting in easy graphitization at higher temperatures.

    Melamine-formaldehyde resin containing boron was prepared from boric acid, melamine and formaldehyde. B/C/N materialswere prepared through carbonization of the boron-containing resin at 800-1000 °C in an inert atmosphere. A high nitrogencontent (N/C ratio) was achieved through the formation of B-N bonding due to the added boron. The highest N/C ratio of0.24 was observed even at a high heat-treatment temperature of 1000 °C. Its electric double-layer capacitance (EDLC) wasas high as 500 F/g (at a constant current=100 mA/g), although its specific surface area was not huge compared to that ofactivated carbon. From the standpoint of specific capacitance per unit surface area, it was clearly shown that nitrogen contentgreatly contributes to the EDLC performance.

    In polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), many kinds of carbonaceous materials are used as electrocatalyst support, gas diffusionlayer, bipolar plate, etc. These carbons are exposed to a strongly oxidative environment of high electrode potentials,high oxygen concentrations, high temperature, and high water content. Therefore, the oxidative degradation of carbonaceousmaterials is a serious issue to be overcome. In this review, we investigate the oxidation of carbonaceous material under conditionsfound in PEFCs, using highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a model. We also explore a way to mitigate theoxidative degradation of carbon by decorating the surface of HOPG with metal oxides.

    This study intends to establish the guideline to increase the wear resistance together with the tensile modulus of polymericfibers through the addition of fillers. This has been achieved through the development of the method to determine the wearrates of fibers, the model analysis to elucidate the factors governing the wear behavior of polymeric fibers and comparison ofthe wear behavior of polymeric fibers added with various fillers with various aspect ratios. The wear rates of fibers have beendetermined by contacting the single fibers to a rotating drum covered with abrasive paper and measuring the cross-sectionarea lost by wear, taking account of the normal load applied to this point. By applying this method, the abrasive wear resistanceof polyamide 6 (PA6) fibers added with titanium carbide particles (TCP's), aluminum borate whiskers (ABW's) andvapor-grown carbon fibers (VGCF's) and poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers added with carbon nanotubes (CNT's) with cup-stuck structure have been investigated. The addition of fillers more effectively improved wear resistance of polymericfibers as compared with the effects brought about by the drawing and the heat treatment. This result has been analyzedbased on a model with which the coefficient of friction and the wear rate have been related to the microhardness, the resistanceagainst sliding, the fracture probability and the geometry factor. ABW's and VGCF's having high aspect ratios increasedthe fracture toughness against abrasive wear. On the other hand, the fillers having a small aspect ratio exerted the rolling effectwhich has been recognized from the decrease in the resistance against sliding. The wear resistance increased more effectivelyby the addition of two kinds of fillers having different aspect ratios since two kinds of fillers exerted different effects.
