We assumed the relationship between the intensity of olfaction and koku in daily life in patients. In addition, to
further examine the influence of olfaction, we investigated changes in the intensity of koku after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in patients for chronic sinusitis.
The subjects were 89 patients who underwent olfactory tests using either Open Essence or T&T olfactometry. They responded on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) regarding their olfaction, food palatability, the five basic tastes, and the complexity, mouthfullness, and lingeringness of koku based on their subjective symptoms in daily life. The olfactory tests and olfactory VAS scores were correlated with the three elements of the koku VAS scores. Eight patients after ESS had significantly improved not only olfaction tests and the VAS score, but also the subjective assessment of koku and food palatability.
