    Influence of various factors on the worrking efficiency of basic open hearth furnaces was investigated ; and the most suitable ratio of charging pig to scraps, the composition of pig, the pouring time of the molten pig and the ratio of tie air to gas blowing-in through ports were determined.

    Four kinds of high-tensile structural steel sheets of Mn-series, Cr-series; and Moseries, each of which contains small quantity of the corresponding element, were manufactured experimentally and studied with reference to the melting, working efficiency in rolling and properties of the sheet. The specimens of the following analyses were taken from the sheet of 12mm. thickness whi.ch had been rolled from the ingot each weighing 7, 500kg and being made by the basic electric furnace.
    No difficulty was met with in melting and rolling. The properties of the sheet as rolled fall in the range: tensile strength 55-65kg/mmmm2, yield point 40-45kg/mmmm2, and elongation 20%. When various analyses were compared, they showed negligible difference in mechanical properties either as rolled or as simply heat-treated; but the single-Mn series steels which are currently used were proved to be economical and practical; and, when subjected to a further heat treatment such as quenching and tempering, the Gr-and Mo- series proved to be slightly better.

    The size and shape of the silica sand grain are important for the binding strength of the molding sand, but effect of the binding medium is more important. The second and the third report of the present study dealt. with the silica sand. The present rbport described the selection of the binding medium, which should be considered in the following two points: (1) selection of clay and (2) selection of the mixing liquid. Since the mechanism of the binding phenomenou is very important for the selection of the binding medium, it was first studied and the process of the selection of the binding medium was detemined from the surface tension of the binding liquid and the flowing capability of sand.

    The corrosion of iron and steel has been much studied during some years past. However, the investigation on the galvanic corrosion or contact corrosion of iron and steel has been performed in comparatively small circles and very few reports published.
    The author studied the effect of chemical composition and micro-structures on the galvanic corrosion of cast iron specimens which had been immersed in the 3% Nacl solution, being made in contact with each other. According to the result of such simple test, some minute difference in the electrolytic solution pressure of different cast irons was distinctly recognized, which revealed that T.C and Si, by their graphitizing effect, increase the solution pressure, while Mn, Cr, Ni, and Cu decrease it. It was presumed that a high grade cast iron with low C and low Si which also contains nickel or chromium should more remarkably retard the corrosion velocity when made in contact with the equal volume of a plain cast iron with higher T.C and Si. FolloWing, therefore, the proper selection of combination of the materials in contact, galvanic corrosion of the main parts of marine engines would be more prevented. Investigations of such practical applications and the result of various cases of corrosion tests will be informed in the near future.

    The physical, mechanical and welding properties of a proprietery staihless steel of the following composition were studied:C 0·25; Si 0·1-2·0; Cu 0·05-4·5; Ni 1-7; Cr 16-30; W 0·2-8·0%. One or more of the following optional element may be present: V 1·0; Co 1·0; Al 1·0; Ti 1·0%. In the experiment, the steels were divided into the four grtoups: martensitic, ferritic, austenitic and austeno-ferritic, according with the different proportions of Ni and Cr within the patented range and to each of which 1-8% W was added. From the result of the experimgnt it was concluded that, besides its high strength and at elevated and room temperatures, it has excellent corrosion resistance to dilute sulphuric, hydrochloric, sulphurous, nitric, phosphoric, oxalic, tartaric, acetic and formic acids. Steels containing 18% Cr, 7% Ni and 5-8% W may be favorably used for handling such solution as ferric chloride or sea water plus hydrogen peroxide, which will cause pitting. As, for the resistance to infergranular corrosion, the addition of W alone is, not so efficient as that of Ti or Cr, but rather Si or Ti should be accompanied for this purpose.

    The effect of third elements such as Mn, Cr, Mg and Si on the rate of diffusion of Cu into the molten Al was studied. The rate of diffusion of Cu plus Zn, Fe plus Ni, or Si Plus Mg, when each couple is added simultaneously into the molten Al, was compared with that of each element when added separately. The equjplmerlt for the diffusion process applied to the present experiment was exactly the same as that used in the previous study. From the result of such investigation, it was conc uded that:
    (1) The rate of Cu diffusion is pronouncedly retarded by the presence of Si in the molten Al, but selightly lowered or substantially unaffected by the presence of the other elements.
    (2) The diffusion rate of the more rapidly diffusing media Fe and Si markedly decreases, while that of the more slowly diffusing media Ni and Mg increases, in the case of simultaneous diffusion of Fe plus Ni, and Si plus Mg. There is however scarcely any difference between the simultaneous and the separate diffusion in the case of aading Cu and Zn which have the same rate of diffusion when added alone.
