Vertical profile of air temperature is measured by radiosonde set on anchored balloon at a winter night, 3-4 December 1979, under the condition of clear sky and gentle wind. The observations were made at four points distributed in about 15km distance, in northwestern Chiba Prefecture (Fig. 1).
Surface inversion appeared before sunset (about 15:30JST). Intensity of inversion increased to midnight and the depth of inversion layer reached 50-75m at midnight. Between 0 to 1JST temperature profile showed sudden change; strong inversion layer is elevated to 50-100m hight and ground based isothermal layer appeared under 50m bight (Fig. 2, 3). The similer change of temperature profile appeared at three suburban observation points except at one point placed in flat grass field. Concentration of NO and NO2 are high within the inversion layer and their vertical profile show simultaneous change with that of inversion (Fig. 4, 5).
It is shown by wind field analysis, that the cold northern wind causes the change of temperature profile. The wind is a part of land breeze from Kanto Plain to the Tokyo Bay (Fig. 6, 7). These phenomena appeared at 34 nights during December of 1975-1979 (Table 1, 2 and Fig. 8), which correspond to the occurence frequency of about a half number of nights with clear sky and gentle wind.

In this paper the author clarifies the change of field land use and its characteristics in the Kanto district according to analysis of cultivated acreage data by municipalities 1965 to 1985, which was edited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery. Spatially field acreage by municipalities 1965 to 1985, in the Kanto district, increase with local pattern and decrease with regional pattern. These spatial patterns of increase or decrease have characteristics of both the circular structure and the east-west regional difference also. Direct or indirect influence of metropolitan urbanization is reflected in characteristic of circular structure on increase or decrease pattern of field acreage. Land condition such as alluvial plain and diluvial upland is reflected in characteristic of east-west regional difference on increase or decrease pattern on field acreage.
Consequently increasing pattern of field land use is concerned with tendencies of both viable and part-time farming, so that viable farmers are developed with the enlargement of field acreage and some part-time farmers enlarge field acreage to compensate the losses of extensive land use. These tendencies convert mutually and reversely according to farmers' estimate of socio-economic environment and urbanization. On the other hand, decreasing pattern of field land use is concerned with urbanized and underpopulated area. In viable farming stage, decreasing pattern of field land use is able to be partly converted into increasing pattern according to enlargement of farming scale. But most decreasing pattern of field land use, in part-time farming stage, is not able to be converted into increasing pattern. Increasing pattern of urbanized and underpopulated area is not reversion, so that field land use change of decreasing pattern is uni-directional.

The author believes that it is essential to establish a new model of geographical terminology in order to develop a theory of geographical systems. In this paper he has listed all the terms which compose the titles and summaries of papers in four major geographical journals, and he has examined whether these terms can become fundamental data for compiling a systematic list of geographical terms in Japanese.
He has used a data-base named “CHIRI” which was constructed by him from 552 cases recorded in the four journals published between 1985-1990. Operating a specific computer program, he made five lists of terms out of titles and summaries of all the papers. These lists contain over ten thousand terms which consist not only of geographical terms but of terms also from other fields. They were compared with the terms in the index of “A Dictionary of Geography” (revised edition, Ninomiya-shoten, 1989).
It has become clear that they are useful in making a systematic list of geographical terms in Japanese, and in particular the lists consisting of compound nouns are not only very useful for this purpose but are invaluable for showing the latest trends in geography. Note:
