The structure of the vascular bundles in the culm nodes of sweetsorghum has been studied in serial transverse and longitudinal sections. Three types of vascular bundles are recognized in the culm nodes of sweetsorghum : (1) Bundles entering the leaf sheath which are swollen and elliptical, and contain numerous xylem transfer cells at the level C-E in Fig. 1 (EB), (2) Collateral bundles entering the internode above the node (CB), (3) Anastomosing bundles entering the axillary bud which interconnect both EB and CB (AB). The later two types of bundles contain no xylem transfer cells. EB and AB are amphivasal at the levels C-E in Fig. 1. The significance of the distribution of these vascular bundles and the presence of xylem transfer cells in the culm nodes is discussed in relation to solute transport.
