The functional activity of the eccrine sweat glands in the toe-pads of non-anesthetized dogs was investigated.
Spontaneous sweating of central origin was found to be considerable in dogs in early months (within 1-3 months) of birth. This sweating was easily blocked by local administration of atropine, but not by dihydroergotamine, indicating a cholinergic nerve supply to the sweat glands.
The responsiveness of the glands to local injections of adrenaline, nor-adrenaline, isopropylnoradrenaline, carbaminoylcholine, acetylcholine, mecholyl and pilocarpine was determined with the toe-pads in which the spontaneous sweating had been eliminated by blocking the peripheral nerves with procaine, using the band method.
The axon reflex sweating was found to be elicited by local application of nicotine. The occurrence of this response was limited to the toe-pads which had been maintaining the ability to produce a considerable spontaneous sweating. The ability of producing spontaneous sweating and the responsinveness to the sudorific agents of the glands were reduced with advancing age. Further-more, the responsiveness to the sudorific agents was found to decrease progres-sively following the denervation of the glands.

Conduction velocity of excitation in various regions of the cat ureter was studied through the simultaneous recordings of five action potentials of the ureter by using of the multiple electrodes. The conduction velocity was very slow in the renal pelvis where the pacemaker was located, i.e., about 2mm/sec on an average. In the proximal region of the ureter, the velocity gradually increased with distance from the pelvis, while the velocity became constant (about 200mm/sec) in the regions more than about 15 mm away from the renal end of the ureter. It was concluded that the conduction velocity of excitation was significantly different between the pacemaker region and the follower tissue of the ureter.

It has been well known that the e. p. p. of the frog muscle shows facilitation or depression according to the state of muscles. Concerning the transmitter output the quantal nature and its relation to repetition of impulses have been reported by del Castillo and Katz and the dependence of neuro-muscular facilitation and depression on Ca++ content of the medium by Lundberg and Quillish and other authors.
The purpose of the present paper is to get further information about the pattern of e. p. p. trains in connection with the transmitter output. The intra- or extracellular electrode was adopted for recording the train of e. p. p. The pattern of e. p. p. and its change evoked by the train of nerve impulses of various frequencies were investigated in various media, in the post-tetanic potentiation or in the stretched state of muscles. Ca++ deficiency or Mg++ addition brought about facilitation, and excess of Ca++ depression; post-tetanic potentiation, stretching of muscles had the similar effect as the latter. Whereas vagostigmine 10-6 did not produce any change of the pattern of curarized muscles at least concerning its pattern. Therefore the change of pattern in this experiment came probably from the change of transmitter output, of which decrease resulted in facilitation; increase in depression, and did not come from the change of post-synaptic sensitivity to Ach.

On histologic examination of a total of 202 stomach cancer specimens of proximal resection or total gastrectomy, 102 cases or 50.6 per cent revealed esophageal invasion of carcinoma. In 94 cases with carcinoma in the upper third of the stomach, the incidence of esophageal invasion was as high as 65.9 per cent. Two principal routes were recognized in esophageal extension of stomach cancer: One was invasion through the submucosal lymphatics (observed in 43 cases, 42.2 per cent of the 102 cases) and the other was the extension of serosal involvement of stomach cancer into the serosa or fibrosa of the esophagus in the form of incipient carcinomatous peritonitis (34 cases, 33.3 per cent). There were also occasions that the esophagus had been involved by both of the above mechanisms. Most of the cases with esophageal invasion were associated with other manifestations of extragastric spread of carcinoma, e.g., peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis. However, the cases with solely sub-mucosal infiltration to the esophagus included a considerable number of ob-jectives of radical surgery that showed little or no evidence of other extragastric spread.

Deterious effect of nicotine on cells of rabbits' aortic and myocardial cells in tissue cultures was reported by Kokubu and Pollak (1962). Koide and Pollak (1963) found cigarette smoke condensate more damaging than nicotine to rabbits' cardiovascular cells in vitro.
The present study elucidates the direct action of cigarette smoke on aortic and mycoardial cells in cultures of explants from normo- and hypercholesteremic rabbits.

In an attempt to examine tumor specific antigens, the crude suspensions of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells and the mouse muscle homogenates were treated by fluorocarbon. Antisera against the fluorocarbon treated antigens were prepared in rabbits. The antisera were tested for the presence of antibodies against the homologous and heterologous antigens by complement fixation test. The anti-tumor serum contained antibody against the homologous antigen, but no detectable amount of antibody against the muscle antigen. The anti-muscle serum, conversely, possessed an antibody against the muscle antigen, but showed no antibody against the tumor antigen. By means of the complement method of immunofluorescence, Ehrlich tumor cells were specifically stained with the anti-tumor serum. The staining titer, as expressed by its final effective dilu-tion, was comparable to those demonstrated in the in vitro complement fixation test. Furthermore, it was found by immunofluorescence that the anti-tumor serum stained the cells of ascites of sarcoma 180 and those of leukemic ascites tumor SN 36 in mice, but not the peritoneal non-tumor cells obtained from normal mouse.

A case of mental and physical retardation inherited as a sex-linked recessive trait is presented. Laboratory findings revealed an elevated level of glutamic acid, diminished level of glutamine in the cerebrospinal fluid, mild generalized aminoaciduria and galactosuria. Pneumoencephalogram indicated a remarkable atrophy of the cerebral cortex.

Adrenal lesions in 89 cases following protracted medication with glucocorticoid derivatives seemed to depend on the age and basic disease of the patient and the element of the agent as well as the dosage and method of medication. Selective and simple atrophy comparable to the adrenal findings confirmed in 10 cases of panhypopituitarism was occasionally observed particularly in cases with relatively short-term medication. Pancortical and degeneration atrophy was most prevalent in cases of long-term medication particularly with large dosage of modern derivatives. Diffuse and nodular hyperplasia of compact cells com-parable to the effect of corticosteroid withdrawal was rare but detected in certain leukemia cases protractedly treated with cortisone or prednisolone.

Transperitoneal implantation of mouse ascites hepatoma MH 134, and transperitoneal or transurethral implantation of rat ascites tumor, Yoshida sarcoma and AH 130, were performed on the urinary bladder of the same strain animals, and following results were obtained. The bladder tumor was developed in high rate with the transperitoneal implantation, while it was produced in the rate of 27.3-54.5% with the transurethral method. The tumor cell was at first embedded in the mucosal layer, then infiltrated with rapid multiplication along the vesical wall invading some contiguous tissues, and thus the typical bladder tumor was produced. The occurrence of ascites had showed some difference between the kinds of tumor cell implanted. And it was found in 25.6-50.0% of the case in which the transperitoneal implantation was performed, while there could not be found any ascites in the case with transurethral implantation. The hy-droureter was found in a half of the cases in which the implantation of tumor cell was performed, and the occurrence rate of it was rather correspondent to the duration after the implantation. And it was assumed that this reveal the invasion of the produced tumor upon the ureteral orifice just as in the clinical cases.
