By applying the concept of critical salt concentration to the differentiation of polyanions, the alcianophilia of the cytoplasm of Paget cells was compar-ed with that of melanoma cell cytoplasm. Methylation, saponification, and hyaluronidase, sialidase, ribonuclease and desoxyribonuclease digestions were employed in a further attempt to identify histochemically various polyanions. The results suggest that the alcianophilia of the cytoplasm of Paget cells is mainly due to carboxyl group-containing polyanions, while that of melanoma cell cyto-plasm is related to nucleic acid.

Attempts were made to analyze by means of a computer system urometro-graphic data of an apparently healthy man as well as electroureterograms of healthy dogs. In an apparently healthy man, discharge intervals of contraction complexes averaged 23.3 see, contracting pressure 27.91mm H2O and resting pressure 11.7mm H2O at a constant urine flow. In normal dogs with constant urine flow, discharge intervals averaged 2.94 sec, travel rate of ureteral peristalsis 30.65mm/sec and amplitude 0.87mV. In normal dogs the discharge interval between action poten-tials of the ureter continuously increased or decreased, or changed in pace more suddenly depending on the degree of increase in intraureteral pressure as urine flow increased.

With isovolemic cross circulation method, a renin-like substance was found in the ovarian venous blood and also in the circulating blood in non-pregnant rabbits, though the content was lower than that of the renal venous blood. In pregnant rabbits, the content of the renin-like substance in the ovarian venous blood and circulating blood was about twice that of non-pregnant rabbits, whereas that in the renal venous blood remained -unchanged. It is assumed that in pregnancy the renin-like substance increases significantly and this pressor material may suggest a uterine source of renin.

The in vitro release of a wide variety of cytoplasmic enzymes, LDH, MDH, ICDH, 6PGDH, G6PDH, PFK and GOT, from mouse Ehrlich ascites tumor cells into the surrounding medium was studied. In every case, no appreciable enzyme release was observed under aerobic condition, whereas under anaerobic conditions there was aa marked release of enzymes. This type of enzyme release can be prevented by glucose. In an aerobic state, only the conditions leading to the impairment of aerobic ATP generation caused a substantial enzyme leakage.
The dye exclusion test with trypan blue proved that the appearance of enzyme activities in anaerobic incubation media is not due to cell lysis.
The percentage of enzyme activity appearing in the incubation medium was highest with 6PGDH and G6PDH, amounting to almost 30% of the initial cellular levels. No clear-cut inverse relationship was observed between the degree of the release of enzymes and their respective molecular weight.
The chromatographic studies on nucleic acids released from the tumor cells revealed that there was a preferential release of higher molecular RNA to lower molecular RNA.
Comparison of several cultured cell lines indicated that malignant cells re-lease enzymes to a much greater extent than do benign cells.

Ehrlich ascites tumor cells labeled with 2-14C-thymidine were irradiated in vitro with 60Co-γ-rays. The total number of cells and total radioactivity were measured daily after intraperitoneal inoculation into mice and the following results were obtained. (1) Number of cell division after irradiation is not reflected in the number of cells, but cell division and rate of cell disappearance determine the number of cells. (2) Delay of the first cell division (G2 block) increases with dose. (3) After dissolution of G2 block, irradiated cells divide in the same rate as that of the control for the first 3 to 4 cell cycles in the dose range examined. (4) The average number of divisions which non-surviving cells go through decreases with increasing radiation dose. (5) The distribution of post-irradiation cell divisions which non-surviving cells go through may be fitted by the Poisson distribution.

On and after the 8th day of a single intramuscular phenylhydrazine injection in rabbits, plasma folate levels increased as compared with those before the in-jection. At that time there was a concomitant increase in urinary excretion of N5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate, probably N10formyl-dihydrofolate and N10formyltetra.-hydrofolate.
This rise in the plasma folate levels after acute hemolysis may be considered as a manifestation of mobilization of folates from the folate store of the liver to the hematopoietic tissue being proliferated by acute blood loss.
Tn the case with massive hemolysis there was another transitory rise in the plasma folate on the 3rd day after the injection, and this rise was considered to be directly related to destruction of erythrocytes where L. caseri active materials might be yielded in the circulating blood by the interaction of the plasma factor and folate precursors of erythrocytes.

Modifications of m ucopolysaccharide (MPS) content were investigated in the livers of thyroidectomized, thyroidectomized plus CCl4-treated and in non-thyroid-ectomized CCl4-treated rats using histological and histochemical methods.
Thyroidectomy seems to decrease the amount of UPS in the liver, inhibiting at the same time depolymerization and accumulation of acid MPS.
On CCl, treatment increased amounts of acid MPS were noted. Hepatotoxic effect was found to be concomitant with increased depolymerization.
After thyroidectomy the characteristic damaging effects of CCl4 treatment could not assert themselves, the histological pattern of the livers being similar to that of thyroidectomized. rats. These examinations seem to indicate a parallelism between MPS and changes of hepatoendocrine correlations.
The histological examinations confirmed the histochernical results.
On the basis of the results obtained the present authors believe that changes occurring in the polymerization, quantity and quality of MPS may contribute to increase the capacity of the liver to inactivate estrogen, and to counteract the hepatotoxic effect of CCl4 treatment in cases of hypothyrosis.
From the results of previous investigations, the present authors point out the interrelation between tryptophan and MPS metabolism.

Aminopterin was given to dams on the 4th, 10th and 18th days after delivery and to offsprings on the 18th day of life, and the frequency analysis of electroencephalograms of the offsprings was done at the age of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 weeks.
A definite delay of maturation of the brain function was observed in rats treated with aminopterin when EEG was examined at the age of 5, 6 and 7 weeks.
In this study an analyzer of basic waves of electroencephalograms was specially prepared so as to be able to observe slight changes in areas with slow waves.

Brain function of exclusively breast fed infants at the age from 3 to 6 months was examined electroencephalographically by using a frequency analyzer which was prepared to be able to observe slight changes in basic waves of slow cycles.
Simultaneously nutritional state of the infants was evaluated by the estimation of serum folate levels of their mothers.
It was found that there was a delay in the maturation pattern of EEG of infants fed on milk from mothers with low serum folate levels.
