This study aimed to obtain suggestions on the sustainability of log production and reforestation activities in Iwate Prefecture by conducting interviews with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Iwate Prefecture and forestry-related organizations in the prefecture and mailing questionnaire surveys(from March to May 2020)to 251 forestry enterprises in the prefecture. The valid response rate was 44%(110 entities). Questionnaire survey results showed that the most notable change over the 10-year period was a dramatic increase in log production in the 10,000–20,000+ m3 group compared with that in the 20,000+ m3 group. The actual reforestation in the 20,000+ m3 group increased substantially compared with that in the 10,000–20,000+ m3 group. The decline in forestry labor force had a greater effect on the reduction in reforestation activities than on logging production activity, and silvicultural activities were supported by the large-scale layer of forestry enterprises. The results suggested two main points. First, reforestation may not keep up with the expansion of log production. Second, if labor force is allocated to reforestation, then production activities in Iwate Prefecture may not increase in the future.
