    Nowadays, as watches become multifunctional, the number of circuit components for watches are increasing. Like other watch makers, CITIZEN is also advancing medium and small scale productions of a wide variety of watches. For this purpose, cost reduction and automation of soldering, in particular, are of urgent necessity. For an actual automation, however, there are a number of items to be accomplished; 1) Positioning accuracy of the circuit components, and constancy of soldering amount, 2) Prevention of solder ball formation, 3) Establishment of soldering technique for the components which cannot be heated entirely, and 4) System switchable for meeting multi-lots scale productions. As the systems meeting the above items, there are two systems: a cell type robot soldering one and a line type point soldering one. An experimental research made on automation of soldering about these two systems is reported in the present paper. Further, a method of quick switching between both the systems only by replacing programs and special jigs is executed, intending to improve repeatability and reduce operating time. Our future task is to develop and introduce higher speed and better-switchable production system utilizing the merits of both the present systems.

    A wide variety of many multi-functional watches using micro-computer ICs are now available for both digital and analog. On the other hand, there have been developed new types of watches which do not seek only functions but aim to help the human being relax and refresh. For these types of watches, we have noted minute repeater. The minute repeater, which had already been made in England late in the 17th centuries, indicates the time by striking gongs. It was a gentle tone mechanical watch. Nowadays, some premium-quality mechanical repeaters close to the works of art are made in Switzerland. However, in addition to their exteriors which are compared to the works of art, in the mechanical type, the mechanisms for indicating the time to the unit of minute are very complicated. Such repeaters are not suitable for mass-production and are very valuable products. In this situation, we made a study in order to realize a quartz minute repeater. Conventionally, there have been a lot of digital watches having functions of indicating the time by alarm or further having a variation of sounds, but those time sounds and alarms are electronic dull sounds without giving human gentleness. Thus, they are inferior to the sounds produced by the mechanical minute repeater. Then, we added the gentleness to the sound which does not exist in the conventional quartz watches and have developed a synthetic struck sound which is produced by electrical drive but is more natural one. As a result, we have succeeded in developing and commercializing a minute repeater of analog type, having a pointer moving over a sector by means of an electromechanical mechanism, and characterized by its appearance, operation and sound so as to give happiness whenever it is used and viewed. In this article, our developed minute repeater, Cal. 6760, will be described.

    This paper describes a miniaturized face shear mode quartz crystal resonator of 4.2 to 6.0 MHz. An object of this paper is to clarify theoretically and experimentally frequency characteristics, frequency temperature behavior and electrical characteristics for the resonator. Another object is to provide a miniaturized resonator with high shock-resistance. The analysis results are then compared with the measured data. As a result, the frequency constant derived from the theoretical analysis agrees well with the measured values, and the resonators with high shock-resistance are also found to have a sufficiently small series resistance R_1, a high quarity factor and a zero temperature coefficient, even if it was extremely miniaturized.

    This study aimed at substantiating possibilities of next-generation microactuators for use in watches. To do this, we have developed an ultrasonic motor that is one of promising elements as a new principle-based actuator. Measuring 10 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm in thickness, this motor records the world's smallest one for practical use. It is powered by a single lithium coin battery and is expected to be applied to a wide range of small-sized portable information devices including watches. Its simple structure makes it possible to reduce the size and also to lower driving frequency. As the primary application, we have incorporated a vibration alarm using this motor into an analog quartz watch. Different from conventional electronic alarm, this watch indicates the alarm time through gentle vibration, Namely, a rotor with an eccentric weight rotates at high speed and centrifugal force generates vibration intermittently. Our experimental study covered establishment of design parameters, such as rotor pressurization, and also of specifications for vibrator capable of rotating at high-speed. In this connection, the basic motor performance was made clear. Development of this motor allowed us to apply a vibration alarm to watches for the first time. Such application has not been achieved so far by conventional electromagnetic motor.
