    Liquid Crystal color displays for watch application were investigated. Liquid crystal displays using the Guest Host Interaction in conjunction with the cholesteric to nematic phase-change effect have high contrast, but need high electric voltage to drive them. In this paper some surface treatments for alignment and some nematic liquid crystalline hosts were examined to lower threshold voltage and to obtain high contrast. Homeotropic alignment and hybrid alignment had lower threshold voltage than parallel alignment. But because of storage light scattering homeotropic alignmeut isn't so suitable. For parallel alignments, teflon rubbing had the lowest threshold voltage. Contrast ratio was higher for hosts of low birefringence, high order parameter and high dielectric anisotropy.

    Film polarizer for the L.C.D. watch is generally chosen from a large selection of commercially ones. The most common type of film polarizer used in the L.C.D. watch is currently sandwich type and has iodine polarizing elements. So we mainly chose this type of film polarizer as test samples and tested them from the view point of stability. From the result of this test, we decided the test conditions for the evaluation of film polarizer for the L.C.D.watch. 1. Dry heat resistance 70℃ 48 hours 2. Heat shock resistance -10℃↔+60℃ 30 minutes each 10 cycle 3. Low temperature resistance -40℃ 48 hours 4. U. V. resistance 5,500℃K, 40,000 Lux, 30℃, 1250 hours 5. Humidity resistance 96%R.H. 40℃ 480 hours Then we examined the relation between the test conditions and normal use conditions of the L.C.D. watch which is water resistant for usual wear, by comparing the polarizing properties. Finally we were able to estimate the span of life of film polarizer used in the L.C.D. watch.

    This resin-bonded magnets have many advantages superior to the sintered ones in forming properties, machining properties, uniformity of products and cost Our process "whole die press forming" can improve those advantages furthermore. This process realized a lowcost mass production of various magnetic parts with little requirement for machining. We have applied SmCo_5 resin-bonded magnent (SAM-D) to a stepping motor and micro buzzer in quartz crystal watches. But this SAM-D magnet was inferior to the sintered ones in magentic properties. For example, its erlergy product (BH) max was 10 MGOe. This time, we have succeeded in developing a new resin-bonded magnet of which magnetic properties are as excellent as sintered ones. As the result, the foregoing disadvantages were eliminated. This resin-bonded magnet has such magnet properties as Br=7.5 to 9.2 KG, bHc=4.5 to 6.7 KOe and (BH)max=14 to 16.5 MGOe. The alloy composition thereof is Sm(Co_0.672 Cu_0.08 Fe_0.22 Zr_0.028)_8.35. The coercive force of this magnet is generated by wall pinning controlled magnetization and depends on the particle size. Making use of this fact. we have succeded in increasing the density of resin-bonded magnet by filling up the voids among large particles with small particles. That leads to enhance to the saturation magnetization 4πIs. We call this type of magnet SAM-DH. In this paper, we plan to report on (1) magnetic properties, (2) production method and (3} application to watches, of SAM-DH.

    Stepping motors which can rotate only in one direction have been used usually as the electro-mechanical converters in quartz-crystal wrist watches. Recently, however, reversible stepping motor have become necessary for wrist watches to be equipped with a lot of functions and to be simplified in mechanism. The present paper gives a result of investigation on the stepping motors which can rotate either direction, clockwise or countcr-clockwise, as is desired. It has been proved here that the reversible rotation can be obtained by varying the index torque, T(θ), or the shape of the drive pulse, E{u(t)-u(t-τ)}. It seems the latter method is more suitable for wrist watches.
