In times of crisis, issues such as SDGs and ELSI have come to be emphasized in science and technology. In other words, science and technology should not pursue the truth of science and technology in a self-purposive manner as in the past, but should move in the direction of making the human society in which we live happy and sustainable, and avoiding human extinction and various problems on the earth. It is the reason that the term “comprehensive knowledge” or “integrated knowledge” is attracting attention nowadays. This is something that the TraFST has been advocating for 20 years through the “Koto-tsukuri Manifesto” and the “Dream Roadmap”. It is a time when the future is difficult to see, but the mission expected of TraFST is to cut through the dimness and create a vision of the future that will encompass the development of society and technology from a broad perspective.

“Koto-tsukuri” is a concept of “making fact” which is used in contrast with “Mono-zukuri” (“making things”). It is a way to create logical and abstract chain of thinking rather than to create things by hand and by machine. TRAFST has been emphasizing importance of “Koto-tsukuri” way of thinking in academic sectors, in industrial sectors and in business sectors. There have been, however, questions on what “Koto-tsukuri” is in academic definitions or on how to describe and utilize it in practical world. The special panel session “Treasures in Koto-tsukuri” was organized in the 14th TRAFST Conference 2023 to discuss academic and practical aspects of “Koto-tsukuri”. This paper summarizes presentations and discussions in the special panel session together with historical records on “Koto-tsukuri” activities in TRAFST.

The Koto-tsukuri Shihou Excavation Program is in the process of selecting Koto-tsukuri Collections. Currently, there are sixteen Koto-tsukuri Collections, and we will select the Koto-tsukuri Shihou from the pool. Prior to the selection, we will organize our discussion points, including the program's background, its history hitherto, and an explanation of what Koto-tsukuri entails. We will clarify the direction of this program to promote its activities for the next ten years of the Transdisciplinary Federation of Science and Technology.
