Design of Koto including service and the use experience is desired compared with that of Mono to have brought dramatic improvements in pursuing convenience and efficiency. Then, the value creation and the importance of timeaxis designing as a new paradigm to construct, support and continue a sustainable developing was investigated. In conclusion, the convergence of functional quality and living quality showed that it became a key for sustainable development.

This paper describes about the timeaxis design which is a new paradigm of design introducing a concept of time axis into design theory and methodology. Moreover, its social meaning along with its position in science are outlined, and a value growth design, and an unsteady and nonequilibrium system design, which are application of the timeaxis design, are described. As a means for realizing of these designs, a bio-inspired technology and service technology are described. Additionally, timeaxis models, which consist of an unsteady model, a plastic model, and a multi-time scale model, and a gray-box model as an integrated model for decision-making used for a timeaxis design are introduced. Finally, a new possibility by using the timeaxis design is indicated.

This article describes the field of human-artifact interaction to develop “timeaxis design” from a semiotic viewpoint. I focus especially on narratology and ludology for considering the subject, and discuss the structure of dynamics of time flow in the field of narrative and game in design. (1) Narratology and ludology offer some effective concepts for interaction design as well as game. (2) Personalized (informal) time is significant in defining timeaxis in interaction. (3) Time in the course of interaction is nonlinear and polychronic. (4) Chronomic factors are necessary in considering reality and agency in interaction.

This paper describes a value growth design which is one of a typical means to embody a timeaxis design. The timeaxis design is a new design which introduced time axis into the theory and methodology of design. On the other hand, the value growth design is a design which appreciates in value with time progress. Clarification of the feature in value growth of artifacts and analysis to case research or literature documentation are performed in order to be contributory to construct a value growth design methodology. Moreover, the value growth design model based on these results is proposed. Additionally, viewpoints considered to be useful to the proposed value growth design model are discussed.

This paper describes a concept of Emergent Control System which is a core module that manages value growth of a next generation mobility. Emergent Control System enables to adapt to the driver’s demand by means of estimation of the field condition of his trips based on identity mapping model and the emerging engine control algorithm based on genetic network programming (GNP). Value growth by Emergent Control System was verified as a subject of the improvement of the fuel efficiency and the battery duration of life in a series hybrid vehicle. The test was conducted on the driving simulator, and the control by Emergent Control System showed greater improvement than traditional engine control.

This work is a conceptual design of the next-generation vehicle system based on the viewpoint of “timeaxis design,” “multi-timescale model” as timeaxis design theory and “bio-inspired design” as timeaxis design methodology. These viewpoints are the new paradigms in the design of the 21st century which aims at solution of various problems, such as exhaustion of resources or energy, environmental destruction, large-scale accident and the difference of wealth and poverty. We propose a new vehicle system which can realize the safety higher than the conventional vehicle system with incorporating the control system, information system and drive system adapting the mechanism in the group behavior as a life system by use of multispace design method based on above mentioned theory and methodology. Moreover, the usefulness of the system is considered from the viewpoint of timeaxis design.
