It is generally said to be difficult to present the knittability by some mechanical properties of yarns. A few years ago Knapton developed a small knitting machine provided with a transducer at the cylinder driving shaft to measure the hnitting performance of yarns.
As Knapton's method seems to be the practical way to evaluate the knittability, an attempt has been made to modify the Knaptons' frame. After various investigations, a new appaaratus has been completed and the following results are obtained :
(1) By minimamizing the specific torque of the frame and its variance, the torque increased by the knitting yarn (T
y) can be measured accurately.
(2)T - L curves obtained in variouscases are very useful to evaluate the knitting performace of yarns.
(3) This apparatus is useful to study the quality control of yarns, knitting oils and waxes, yarn processing conditions, knitting conditions and elements of knitting machines.
