Two surveys were conducted to investigate possible relationships between clothing behaviors and socio-psychological characteristics. The survey (I) and (II) were undertaken to examine relationship between fashion-oriented behaviors and socio-psychological characteristics of 78 high school girls, and relationship between aesthetic-oriented behaviors in dress and the characteristics of 141 collegewomen respectively.
Instruments used in data collection were, measure consisting of 10 fashion-oriented variables, . measure of 18 aesthetic-oriented variables, and Suzuki's socio psychological characteristic measure, which is consisted of 12 scales, namely, self-actualization, inferiority feeling, self-display, deorganization, curiosity, information seeking, feminity, sensitivity, conformity, physical strength, intellectual interest, and delinquency. Coefficients of reliability for the fashion-oriented measure and the aesthetic-oriented measure were 0.81 and 0.80 respectively.
Data were analyzed by using the Hayashi's Quantification Theory I in which the independent variables were the socio-psychological characteristics and the dependent variables were the fashionoriented behaviors. Analysis indicated that a significant relationships do existed in the clothing behaviors and the socio-psychological characteristics and that “curiosity” and “delinquency” in the socio-psychological scales were important variables relating to the fashion-oriented behaviors. For the aesthetic-oriented behaviors, “conformity”, “delinquency”, “sensitivity”, “curiosity”, “femininity”, and “selfdisplay” were found to be variables greatly contributed to the relation.
