Effects of pre-treatments and catalysts-application methods on formaldehyde cross-linking density in cotton fibers finished with vapor-phase-formaldehyde were studied.
Cotton fibers were pre-treated with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, liquid ammonia and their combination.
For vapor-phase-formaldehyde-finishing, two kinds of catalysts application methods were examined. One is MgC1
2 with aqueous solution and the other is SO
2 gas.
It was found that the degree of formaldehyde cross-linkig in vapor-phase-formaldehyde treated cotton fibers depends on the initial moisture regain for MgC1
2 solution system, while depends on both initial moisture regain and pre-treated method for SO
2 gas system.
