Effects of pre-treatments with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and liquid ammonia on wash & wear and mechanical properties of cotton fabrics finished with vapor-phase-formaldehyde were studied .
Pre-treatment effects on wash & wear and mechanical (tensile strength) properties of vapor-phase-formal-dehyde treated cotton fibers were found to be large in the order as follows :
liquid ammonia>aqueous sodium hydroxide solution/liquid ammonia>>aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. These results might coincide with the degree of strain relaxation .
