1. Bulkiness of knitted fabrics by weft knitting such as plain stitch, rib stitch, etc.are theoretically calculated by Smirfitts equation.
The Smirfitts equation expressed as follow.

p/d=0.090 (l/d) + 1 (for plain stitch)

r/d=0. 254 (l/d) + 1 (for rib stitch)
where, t
p : thickness of plain stitch
t
r : thickness of rib stitch
d : diameter yarn
l : yarn lengthm
The result obtained are as follows :
1. The calculated values are similar to the measured values, but the measured value are lower than the caluculated values.
2. 3040% tuck knit of all stitches per unit area gives the maximum bulkiness effect.
3. Long shogging of the thread guide in cord stitch gives higher bulkiness than short shogging of the thread guide gives.
4. Fabrics density is directly proportional to bulkiness, but over certain limit of fabrics density, bulkiness is constant or rather decreased.
