  • ―Sharing of “Feeling on Use”―

    Comfortable “feeling on use” is important for skin care cosmetics. Therefore, it is important to perform sensory evaluation and share “feeling on use”. However, there are individual differences in human senses, and it is not easy to share “feeling on use”. So, we tried to create a sensory evaluation manual and the evaluation standards, and share “feeling on use”. When we measured the application movement of cosmetics using wearable contact force sensor system, the application movement of a beauty professional had a higher finger contact force and a constant speed and rhythm compared with those of general women. This sensor is considered to be effective for the analysis of various touching movements.

    The friction of make-up cosmetics such as cosmetic powder, foundation, and nail enamel was outlined. Although the friction characteristics of cosmetics, especially make-up cosmetics, are important factors that affect the tactile texture and finish, there are few reports on this topic. Here, I show some latest results on the evaluation by the sinusoidal-motion friction evaluation system and in-situ observation type tactile sensing system. Findings about delicate sensations such as moist and smooth feeling and interfacial phenomena that occur on the skin surface will be useful in designing and developing new cosmetic ingredients and formulations.

    The features of bioconjugation technology, which was meant to improve age-related changes in hairs, have been reviewed. This technique continuously improves hair changes by crosslinking the inside of hairs and stabilizing oil to the surface of hairs. Hairs treated with this technique have been evaluated in terms of tribology.

    Hairstyles are an important groom for women. In particular, women are sensitive to fashion, and various hairstyles have become popular with the history. For each hairstyle there is a suitable hair-styling agent. Hairstyles with chemical reactions and heating will cause more hair damage. The damage to the hair surface can be determined by “surface observation using SEM” or “measuring the coefficient of friction”. The damage to the surface of the hair tends to roughen the surface and increase the coefficient of friction.

  • ―Moist Feeling When Rubbing Lips―

    “Moisture” in the lips is very important in the point of the structure of the lips. So far, moisturizers and high occlusive lip film have been studied in order to improve lipsticks or lip balm care performance. We were looking for more approaches that consumers could realize from the formulation. Therefore, we focused on “smoothness when rubbing lips” from an interesting survey. A polymer that imparts a moist feel was revealed to develop rheological normal force, and a cellulose derivative was developed. It is also interesting in terms of tribology from the viewpoint of reducing the friction when the lips are rubbed together.

  • ―The Eternal Rival “Rotary or Reciprocation Type Shaver”―

    From time immemorial, shaving one’s beard has been continued. Using razor or electric shaver is common for all male adult to show their cleanliness recently. The custom for shaving my beard by myself was harbingered by World War I and II. Tremendous safety razors were provided by US government to frontline infantry, then they acquired a custom of “shaving by myself”. An electric shaver was invented early of the 20th century, and it is divided two shaving motion, a rotation or a reciprocation. In this article, investigating the relation between inner blade’s edge radiuses and pulling force, clarifying differences of shaving mechanism of a rotation or a reciprocation type shaver by a high speed camera with measuring pulling force simultaneously are explained.

    When performance of the metal material is required beyond the capabilities that can be delivered by the metal material itself, further performance is obtained by modifying the surface of the metal material or applying another substance on the surface. Among them, carburizing and nitriding treatment has long been carried out to harden the surface with respect to properties such as wear resistance and fatigue strength. There are various treatment methods of carburization and nitriding, and it is necessary to use many pages to explain all of them, so here, the basic reaction on the deposition of carbon and nitrogen atoms both in gas carburizing and nitriding and the diffusion process toward the depth direction of carbon and nitrogen. We will also introduce new technologies and materials that utilize these technologies.

    Talking about the way to heat and to cool, there is direct heating method such as direct fire. In order to control the temperature precisely to avoid local heating, most industries tend to use indirect heating by applying heat transfer fluid. The most familiar fluid is water. However it is required to be high pressure at high temperature, and freeze in 0 degree, which has some restrictions. Therefore, organic heat transfer fluid like synthetic oil is effective. In this article, we would like to introduce some type of fluid in order to use heat transfer fluid, required performance, typical type and composition and so on.
