    Turbine housing of turbocharger for gasoline engine is required to reduce thermal stress to avoid low-cycle fatigue. On the other hand, it is also required to cut down its heat capacity to accelerate temperature rising of three-way catalyst. Thermal stress analysis technique by combining elastic-plastic analysis with conjugate heat transfer(CHT)analysis was developed to predict transient change of thermal stress by driving load and to design reliable light turbine housing. It is showed that this technique had sufficient accuracy compared to temperature measurement results. By using this technique, existence of excessive strain areas around waste gate port was predicted.

    A prototype pump performance converted from its model pump performance shows an increase in efficiency compared with that of the model pump. The increase is brought about by the decrease in friction loss in the pump. The friction force on impeller blades causes a part of peripheral motion of the outlet flow from the impeller, and accordingly the increase in prototype efficiency is related with the decrease in its input power. This paper analyses the behavior of the theoretical head or input power of the prototype pump, applying friction drag coefficient of a flat plate to blade passage friction. As a result it is revealed that the friction drag of a flat plate can be substituted for the friction drag of impeller blades to a certain degree as a means of analyzing the relationship between the efficiency increase and the power decrease of the prototype pump.

    Cross-flow wind turbine of vertical axis drag-type has inefficient part of swept area that doesn’t work because, in the part, the blades are moving in the opposite direction to the wind. However, in our study, the cross-flow wind turbine in the flow with separation near the edge of structure such as building showed higher performance than in uniform flow and by using a flow deflector the flow with separation near the edge could be improved to make the performance even higher by 30 to 50%. From these results, the optimum flow of cross-flow wind turbine was figured out. In this study, the attempt to get the optimum flow of cross-flow wind turbine in uniform flow was made by using a casingwith two flow deflectors called the dual flow deflector(DFD)casing and the performance test and numerical flow analysis of cross-flow wind turbine with the DFD casing were done.

    The friction and wear characteristics of hydraulic guide vane bearing, which was designed to be worthy to sever operation, were investigated with lead-free self-lubrication bearing using radial journal test apparatus in fresh water condition. The friction and wear behaviors were compared with that of conventional self-lubrication. Though the friction coefficient of lead-free self-lubrication bearing is slightly high tendency in the early tests, ratio of abrasion quantity is not influenced by surface state of bearing and shaft. Lead-free self-lubrication bearing influenced by Hardness of shaft, and ratio of abrasion quantity of lead-free self-lubrication bearing is less than that of conventional self-lubrication. Lead-free self-lubrication bearing is applicable to hydraulic guide vane bearing.

    Numerical simulations were conducted by using LES(Large Eddy Simulation)with DSM(Dynamic Smagorinsky Model)about the axial flow small fan for cooling electronic devices. In this study, the tested fan has an obstacle located in the suction side. Distance from the fan to obstacle is 20 mm. The flow pattern around the fan blades and RMS of pressure fluctuation on the fan blade surfaces were compared under the conditions of with and without obstacle. The flow direction into fan was axial under the condition of without obstacle. On the other hand the flow direction into fan was radial under the condition of with obstacle. This radial direction inflow to the fan caused the expansion of negative pressure region due to the separation from the top of casing, which enlarged tip vortex region and increased pressure fluctuation on suction side blade surface. Moreover the radial inflow caused the reduction of axial flow velocity at the blade tip, which increased pressure fluctuation on pressure side blade surface due to the interference between tip vortex and blade surface.

    Data center has been built with spread of cloud computing. Further, electric power consumption of it is growing rapidly. High power cooling fans are used for servers in the data center and there is a strong demand to increase power of it because of increase of quantity of heat from the servers. Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of the high power cooling fans. It is important to clarify complicated internal flow condition and influence of a geometric shape of the cooling fans on performance and internal flow condition to achieve the high performance cooling fans. Numerical analysis of a cooling fan with 40 mm square was conducted and influence of tip clearance on performance was investigated experimentally in this research.

    A two dimensional Darrieus-type turbine has been proposed for hydropower utilization of extra-low head less than 2 m. In a practical use of Darrieus-type hydro turbine, head and flow rate may be varied temporally and seasonally. Considering that the cost advantage is required for the low head hydro turbine system, the Darrieus turbine should be operated with high efficiency in the wider range of flow rate by an additional device of simple mechanism. In the present paper, a countermeasure against performance deterioration in low flow rate condition is proposed. It is an adjustment of inlet nozzle section by lowering the inlet nozzle height to obtain the preferable inlet velocity. Therefore, the effect of spanwise partial inlet flow on the turbine performance, correlation with downstream water level, and self-starting characteristics are experimentally investigated. Finally, an effective modification of inlet nozzle height over flow rate variation is shown.
