    Stage performances are recently made using interaction technologies between performers' body movements and images for stage design, and the interactions occur mainly on the stage. Conventionally, audiences basically see the same scenery from performances on the stage. However, interactions between stage and audiences are important for individualized experiences of audiences. We consequently realized an interactive performing art stage using audiences' eye movements. On performing art stages, audiences make eye movements at various times triggered by body actions of performers and spot lights. If light arrays are flickering fast enough during the eye movements, the audiences can perceive 2D images due to afterimage on the retina. The shapes of the afterimages are different according to their eye movements. The light arrays function not only as illumination, but as a visual display, which can present different 2D images for each audience.

    In this paper, we discuss what the essences of music are, based on an experiment to survey audience's evaluation on musical performances by new interfaces. We composed ten pieces by introducing various types of uncertainty (chance operation), musical score, and instrument, and performed them at a concert where 180 audiences gathered. From the results of inquiry, we concluded that the essences of music include humaneness and structure in addition to melody, rhythm and harmony. Moreover, we founded that subjects with experience of music tend to be hospitable to the evaluation than subjects with no experience of music. They are inclined to put much faith in humaneness when they estimate the worth of beauty, pleasure and likes as well as evaluating whether it is a music or not.

    This paper proposes a real-time system transforming your shadow on a floor into a colorful visual media. This system is based on the effect of complementary color and multi-projection techniques. A user occluding the projector light may create an undesirable shadow in front-projector-based systems. We overcome and turn this problem into our advantage with an elaborately designed optics including multi-projection techniques (geometrical and photometrical alignments), so that our system makes it possible to display colorful textures, colorful pictures, sharp characters, and even a movie in your shadow.

    Kansei feature extraction from body-movements has been investigated as a part of development of image expression techniques using multimedia. We chose dance as a subject of our research, because dance performers can present fundamental and typical motion patterns efficiently. It is shown that three psychological factors were extracted through SD test and principal component analysis as well as shown that human body-movement can be expressed by linear combinations of physical parameters measured for dance scenes through applying multiple regression analysis.

    We offer Cultural Computing as a method for cultural translation that uses scientific methods to represent the essential aspects of culture. Including images that heretofore have not been the focus of computing, such as images of Eastern thought and Buddhism, and the Sansui paintings, poetry and kimono that evoke these images, we projected the style of communication developed by Zen schools over hundreds of years into a world for the user to explore - a somewhat exotic Eastern Sansui world. Through encounters with Zen Koans and haiku poetry, the user is constantly and sharply forced to confirm the whereabouts of his or her self-consciousness. However, there is no "right answer" to be found anywhere.

    This paper describes the artwork we have developed for the exhibition, "NIWA" where the particle responses. The exhibition was held from July twelfth to twenty-third at OKAMURA corporation show room in Akasaka and Vennice Biennale which started from September twelfth in 2004. The authors planned the concept and developed the system for the exhibition in which visitors indoors could control a "bamboo-rake robot" to leave trails in an outdoor rock garden by using three types of interfaces: Open-space interface, tangible interface and speech interface. The authors describe the concept of the exhibition and how we developed the system. The responses and comments from visitors are also reported.

    This paper discusses a new concept named "device art." The recent decades has shown significant advance in the interactive artwork created in Japan. Those artworks employ innovative interface devices. Device art has different characteristics from western art; bottom-up creation process, playfulness, and commercialization. Traditional Japanese culture, such as tea ceremony or flower arrangement, uses sophisticated devices, which are roots of device art.

    The conventional sports skill trainings using the visual feedback information are executed off-line. However, we suspect that giving the information on a motion under training is more efficient to obtain sports skill, because the learner can correct the motion in real time. But it is difficult to obtain the visual feedback information in real time, because the information shown in the display can't be seen because there are many cases where the learner's eyes can't be turned on that display. The problem is solved by using HMD, and the system which makes it possible to give information, without depending in the direction of learner's eyes is devised. In this paper, Golf swing is taken up as the subject of sports skill, and we show the system using the visual feedback information in real time can be obtained sports skill quickly.

    A shared virtual space communication system was developed, with multi-user walk-through function using locomotion interface, and voice communication function by Voice over IP technology. An algorithm for the automatic control of the group of the voice communication was implemented using spatial relationship of the users. Visual and auditory awareness about the presence of the other users in the conversational area were also attained. The automatic group control and awareness representation were effective for natural and smooth voice communication in shared virtual space. A pseudo gaze awareness system using each user's voice volume has also been developed.It was experimentally demonstrated that the pseudo gaze awareness is effective to enhance the conversation.

    Archaeologists consider that ancient painters and sculptors worked inside the caves with an artificial light such as a torch. On the other hand, little accumulations of soot, a side effect of the use of torches, are observed in Fugoppe cave; we consider that there is a possibility of the use of natural sun light for sculpting. In order to verify enough existence of natural light from the entrance of the cave to work, we simulated how natural light illuminate inside walls of Fuggopp cave using its 3D model obtained from our modeling system, and examine the possibility that ancient sculptors work under natural illumination in Fuggope cave.

    This paper presents a new wire-tension control system, which enables wire-driven force display systems with maximum display force of several hundreds [N]. This system ensures safety quantitatively and mechanically as we can estimate safety in international and domestic standards. Moreover, we have developed wire-driven force display system using MR actuators based on new wire-tension control system. This force display system has high performance in force display with observing these safety standards.

    The sound field reproduction technique is important to realize the more realistic communication system. However, a transmission data should be reduced for the remote system based on wave field synthesis since the technique usually needs a great number of channel signals. The spatial coding method for moving sound sources is proposed in this paper. In encoding side, the moving source signals are extracted by convolving channel signals to the inverse transfer functions, which are calculated from room transfer functions due to the location of sound sources. In decoding side, channel signals are reconstructed by convolving extracted source signals to the room transfer functions. As a result, the data to be transmitted is reduced from the number of channels to that of sound sources. To evaluate the coding method, a simulated reverberant sound field was synthesized by using an image method. The effect of the coding method on the perceptual quality was evaluated by subjective assessment.

    In our previous study, we found that some elders who could not differentiate monocular and binocular vision decreased their discrimination ability of the approach velocity. We considered this phenomenon is caused by the decrease in the ability of binocular depth perception. Thus, in this study, we developed the inspection system for the human's discrimination ability of the approach velocity in virtual space. We investigated the fusion recognition rate of the object and the condition possible to create a stereopsis for younger and elderly people. It became clear that the fusion recognition rate related to the size and moving distance of the object.

    A new type of interactive attraction in mixed reality environment, BLADESHIPS, has been designed and developed. The BLADESHIPS is a game in which players compete with each other by controlling virtually expressed belt-shaped flying objects, "ships", with their hands in a real environment. They control their own ships by avoiding other ships and real/virtual obstacles. They try to drive enemy ships to hit the obstacles. The occlusion between real and virtual objects and the collision of virtual ships with the real environment are represented to increase the reality of the game.

    The health hazards posed by Virtual Reality (VR) environments can be divided into two groups based on their developing mechanism. The first group is related to optical stimulus load and is exemplified by Visual Display Terminal (VDT) Syndrome. The second group encompasses those caused by space information confusion and is exemplified by VR sickness. Among space information confusion induced hazards, VR sickness is especially serious because it can involve strong discomfort, headache, nausea and vomiting. Because VR sickness may prove to be a barrier to the spread of VR environments, it is thought that countermeasures are required. This paper reports the current state of VR sickness countermeasure knowledge. Research is summarized and organized mainly according to the following stories: "Cognition of VR sickness", "Mechanisms involved with the development of VR sickness", "Directions for countermeasure development" and "Evaluation of VR sickness".
