Surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals with high-pretilt aligning film rubbed in parallel showed three types of states : C1-uniform (C1U), C1-twisted(C1T), and C2 states. The C1U and C2 states Showed extinction positions but the C1T state did not. The memory angle of the C1U state was larger than that of the C2 state. The optical characteristics and the molecular orientations of these states were discussed in combination with the calculations using the 4×4 matrix method.

The polymer structure in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) is thought to determine its electro-optical properties. Therefore, the authors have tried to control the polymer network structure of PDLC and have found it was possible to control the orientation of the polymer network, by photopolymerizing from nematic phase mixture of monomer and liquid crystal material. By using this method, it is predicted to control liquid crystal orientation in this polymer network reliably and reproducibly.

It is well known that small tilted homeotropic alignment of liquid-crystal molecules is obtained by oblique evaporation followed by homeotropic treatment. However, this method has disadvantage in obtaining large area uniformity and productivity because of requirement of a large vacuum equipment. To solve this problem, a new alignment technique of small tilted homeotropic alignment using rubbing method (THR method) is proposed. The THR method has advantage in obtaining large area uniformity and productivity because of non-requirement of a large vacuum equipment. In this paper, the applicability of this method for display device is discussed.

In this research, the dependence of the isolated Mn^<2+> concentration in ZnS : Mn film on the film processing condition was investigated by means of EPR technique. EPR results show that isolated Mn^<2+> concentration in ZnS : Mn phosphor layer is changed by the annealing process after the film deposition as well as by the substrate temperature during deposition. It is found that more increased number of isolated Mn^<2+> results in the higher brightness of ELD through both increased colliding probability with hot electrons and increased number of the excited Mn^<2+> emission center.

A image signal process system was designed to be aplicable to Color PDP of NTSC-TV pictures by using parallel in serial out converter, through which input analog video signal was treated in real time with pulse memory driving method. Although pulse memory driving method promises enough gray scales and brightness, this method requires signal process clock frequency eight times faster than that of simple scanning method. In order to match the process speed with the sampling speed of input signal, eight parallel in serial out converter were arranged in a pair, in which data storage and data convertion are alternated. The sampling speed of video signal process system was 6MHz. A TV pictures with 128 gray scales were demonstrated by 60 frames per second on the Color PDP with 128×128 cells (0.66mm cell pitch).
