A charge injection type "two level" CCD image sensor has a peculiar random noise generated from its picture cells. The noise has been studied from point of view of electron emission from the storage diode. The actual noise value obtained by measuring a 1-inch 2-million pixel image sensor corresponds to the analytical value.

New shunt wiring technologies for HDTV FIT-CCD image sensors have been developed. They include tungsten direct shunt wiring structure, as well as a new layout for tungsten shunt lines and aluminum bus lines. A 1-inch format 2M pixel FIT-CCD image sensor was fabricated using these technologies. A low smear level, less than -110dB, was achieved at 1MHz frame shift frequency. Furthermore, a 1.2×10^5 electron charge handling capability was obtained at up to 1.4MHz frame shift frequency.

A 2/3-inch 2M-pixel CMD image sensor has been developed. This sensor was designed to include the interlaced / progressive multi-scanning mode and the electronic shutter. The progressive scanning mode brought out the horizontal and the vertical limiting resolutions of 1000 TV lines. The power dissipation was measured to be 160 mW at the frame frequency of 30 Hz. The low blooming level of -110 dB was achieved.

We propose a novel two-dimensional contact-type image sensor using amorphous silicon photo-transistors (APTs) in order to form a compact image scanner. Each pixel of the sensor consists of an APT, a storage capacitor, and an amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (a-Si TFT). We have made a prototype 140 × 240-pixel sensor with a pixel size of 160 μm square. It is confirmed that the prototype APT sensor can detect an image under room light. Exposure for gray scale images is in the range of 10^<-1> to 7 lx・s. This TFT-switched, two-dimensional contact-type image sensor is promising for large-area applications because the process for APTs is fully compatible with that for conventional a-Si TFTs.

A 1/2-in 380k-pixel progressive-scan CCD image sensor was developed. It has a 3-phase 3-level electrode V-CCD, a dual H-CCD with a compound channel, and a dual-channel output circuitry. All the image signals can be read out without mixing every 1/60 s and vertical resolution of 480 TV lines was achieved.

A new digital card camera system is developed, which utilizes an IC memory card as recording media. The image signal data are mainly digital-processed by the use of ADCT (Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform) and Huffman cording for the compression, which is a indispensable technique for handling the imaging data. As the image data is digitally recorded in the card media, there appears little deteriorations in image quality through post-processings such as duplication, editing and transmission. This digital card imaging system is easily linked with computers, so a new area of electric imaging will be started.

A high definition digital still camera with 900K pixels CCD has been developed. The camera is fully controlled by the persona computer. The camera captures fullcolor image, size of 960(V)* 1280(H)pixceis as R・G・B 24bit fullcolor data. The image data is transmitted to host computer through SCSI cannel. The camera has good ability for high resolution and good color quality and high S/N ratio.

This paper describes improvement of picture quality for color video cameras by digital signal processing. We proposed two new methods. One method is improvement of color reproduction by the color correct LUT (look up table) and the other method is reduction of the modulated chrominance signal without diminshing high frequency luminance signal. We have confirmed that these methods are useful by computer simulation and the test camera.
